Australian researchers build first two-qubit logic gate in silicon

A team of researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia claim to have overcome a crucial hurdle in quantum computing. Their pioneering work has resulted in the building of a quantum logic gate in silicon for the first time. The logic gate makes calculations between two qubits of information possible and is expected to be a central building block in a quantum computer. This development means that "all the physical building blocks for a silicon quantum computer have now been successfully constructed".

Never under-estimate Australia....sure it appears that all we have is kangaroos, Vegemite and a crapload of deadly animals, but there's much more going on behind the scenes.

As America starts to flounder with a bad economy and a stagnant government, Australia is the dark horse of the engineering race and will possibly come out on top as the better place to be.

I love how everyone's pointing out that 'Australia actually did something', despite the fact that we were responsible for very significant technological advancements in recent times, including wireless internet, all that were later claimed to be invented by the USA.
