GTX 980 with 8gb vram. 4k?

i've decided to put off getting a new laptop until the gtx 980 (non-m) is released. The one i'm getting has 8gb of vram on the 980.
It also has a desktop i7 6700k in it.

980 hasn't been the best card for 4k, at least not compared to the 980ti.
But the laptop comes in a 1080p and a 4k variant.
 

Without the limitations of 4gb vram. how do you guys and gals think the card will perform in 4k? Is the 4gb usually the bottleneck when i look at 4k benchmarks?

The VRAM isn't the major bottleneck for 4K with a GTX 980, so I wouldn't expect more than a few FPS improvement unless the game is very VRAM hungry.

well you wont be able to run ultra 4k with just one 980, so when you play games at medium-high the 4GB will definitely be enough

8 GB will help with 4K, but then it becomes like the 960 4 GB where it doesn't have the horsepower to use all 8 GB without SLI.

Performance would be abysmal by the time 4GB is utilized, let alone 8.

the 1080p version also has an IPS g-sync panel @75hz.

But i've played on 4k screens before. and it just looks soooo good.

Not really. . . no.

A 390 has a 512-bit bus with 6 GHz memory

A 980 has a 256-bit bus with 7 GHz memory

One of the things is significantly lower than the other.

it sort of can - it's memory bandwidth is close to double that of the 980

Maybe not all but a good 7 are fully usable by a single card

It can, but it needs to be a game that uses Vram more than GPU processing, in CFX you will use all of it.

That doesn't change the facts - the 980 was built with 256-bit for 4GB of VRAM in mind - nothing more, nothing less. It already sees a sizable decrease in performance when it gets to the last bit of memory (not as extreme as the 970 but it drops a bit).

8GB on a 980 is like 16GB on a 390X or 4GB on a 750 Ti (it exists) - pointless

The limiting factor is not vram, is the GPU. And it's like the 980 is not enough, a single 980 ti is not enough. If you want 4K, i'd recomend getting the 980 SLI laptop (I think it's MSI) or play at 1080p, to be honest, 4k seems a bit overkill for a laptop, can you get a 1440p option?

The simple truth is a 980 is not nearly enough for gaming in a 4K display. 980s on SLI would do it, but if you don't have that option, don't go for 4k, a single 980 will be overpowered and you won't get a playable experience. I would get a 1080p with a 980 with 4 gigs of vram (More is simply waste) or a 4K with dual 980s and maybe 8 gigs each, but for 4K you need dual GPUs, we're not quiet there yet.

Yep - no idea why but anything above 1080p makes me feel dizzy - not sure if it was the screen or the game in particular but it felt wrong.

Most likely not.

 

You may be able to invent an extreme scenario where you are running Skyrim at 4K with as many graphics mods as you can find and you'd really run up the VRAM usage, but even then I'd imagine GPU throughput is still more likely to be the earliest bottleneck.
