Overclocking - What's the Point?

I don't understand why people bother with overclocking. It generates a ton more heat and higher electric bills. What do you get in exchange? Slightly higher FPS in games. 

 

In addition, you often lose your warranty so when your card or CPU inevitably fails, you're screwed. Also, your parts die quicker and it is often unstable.

I like to overclock because atleast I'm closer to the card thats above it without the price premium. If I had a 980 and I wanted to get close to a 980 Ti's stock performance, I'd overclock it to get close to it. Sure, I'm behind in frames, but its closer than last time despite still nowhere near 1:1 performance to a 980 Ti at its stock speeds. And if you can afford a GPU thats worth $300 and more, you SHOULD be able to pay for the bills anyways.

Let's be honest here, the people who overclock their parts are more than likely to upgrade their hardware before the part even dies.

And for me, in NYC, its only a few cents difference...maybe in the double digitals but it is never higher than a single USD dollar and to me, that isn't a big deal.

By the time my CPU dies while OCing, It will have been replaced. I OC mine without even increasing the voltage, and go from 3.6 ghz boost to 4.6 ghz. If I wanted to I could easily go to 4.8ghz (but have to increase voltage), without going over 65 C, but that would degrade its life a little more, so I simply keep the voltage down

Huh? Stock? Didn't you just mention degrading components? These cards use components of higher quality than stock. Even if a person isn't overclocking, choosing a quality after market card will be better than stock. Heat degrades components too if you didn't already know.

Who said I just use my CPU for games? and OCing my GPU, I can get a 3-5 FPS increase, which is nice on high end games like star citizen. And in Rome Total War II, the OC comes in handy with thousands of troops and using x4 speed.

I've had my 2600K OC'd to 4.4 for over 4 years now, hasn't died yet.

And thats why I said I go from 3.6 to 4.6, to avoid using voltage that will degrade the CPU's lifespan. And Im using a i7-5820k, with a 240mm liquid cooler. Temps are not an issue, and a $100 is a littlemore affordable than a $1100 5960X.

Overclocking is something your supposed to do when the performance of your pc falls down below average, to get that "boost". But everyone swag so we overclock..

It isn't raising the TDP by like 80W you won't notice the difference. Overclocking your modern GPU will not make it go to 90C, if you don't have a reference cooler. CPU overclocking is a bit different but if you have a nice cooler the benefits for both overclocking are more then you think. For the GPU once you get it to max core clock speed then bump up the Vram. You will see a huge difference with Vram hog games. GTA V I went from like 56 to 64 just with a Vram clock change. CPU wise I got another GPU for SLI and after bumping it up to 4.5ghz stable windows is way more snappy and programs just run faster. Noticeably faster. After that if you aren't gaming you can always bump up your RAM but that will only see differences in non gaming. In the end the whole shorten life span, higher heat output are true but not to the degree you think. It will shorten the life if (1.3v or below) from like 10 years to 8 years. You will probably upgrade by then. GPU wise you aren't changing the voltage so you can just crank the slider and see what you get. With an AM cooler
