ASUS 390 STRIX reviews?

Not much on the new 390 STRIX since it came out a few weeks ago but I am wondering if anyone has any reviews on it or knows if it has any issues (I remember reading some of the other STRIX cards had cooling issues).

I am thinking about buying one tonight or tomorrow since it would look amazing with my ASUS Hero VIII motherboard.

Mediocre coolers and ASUS cards cost more here where I live, not worth it when there are wayy better alternatives.

Asus has a history of cutting corners with AMD cards. Last generation with the 290 & 290x ASUS used the cooler they put on Nvidia cards to save money. With those coolers the VRMs were not properly cooled because the main heatsink did not contact them.

Mediocre coolers and ASUS cards cost more here where I live, not worth it when there are wayy better alternatives.

The cooler is actually fine, the reason the temp levels are so high is because the auto fan curve set by Asus is really low.

Bumping up the fans a tiny bit will lower temps a lot.

Guru3d's review of the card shows the card hovers around 40% fan speed underload, which is the reason for the temps.

There is nothing wrong with the 390x if that helps? My friend has one and it performs pree good, temps are good too and it's really quiet. Not too sure about overclocking headroom but I would much rather get the ASUS over the MSI. MSI just feels cheap and there's been some coil whine problems with their cards. Speaking about the new ASUS strix design for itself I would say it's pretty good. I have the ASUS 980ti Strix myself and there's not much I can complain about it, fast, cool and a decent amount of overclocking(based off of others, haven't overclocked mine yet). But if you had the chance to get a Sapphire card I would say go for that first if it doesn't affect your color scheme. Sapphire has just been solid these last 2 years with their cards. I had the 290X VAPOR-X and that thing was a beast

XFX= Full cover waterblock available. Good clockers usually, and cooling is sufficient for core, but not stellar, and VRM's tend to get hot

Sapphire= No water block available, but has excellent air cooling. Require 8+8 pin connectors versus 8+6. Some would prefer that, in hopes of obtaining higher OC results, but unfortunately OC results so far on the Nitro and Tri-X are only mediocre-good

Gigabyte= No waterblocks. Well built card, decent cooling, but the voltage is hard locked, so expect clock ceiling to be very limited... most likely 1100 or less.

PowerColor= Offers full cover waterblocks, and also has excellent air cooling, but so far there have only been weak-mediocre-ish overclocking results. 1150 or less on the core seems to be the norm, with most landing between 1130-1140, even despite it's excellent cooling.

MSI= No full cover waterblocks available. Stock air cooling is good but not great with regards to the core temps, but seems to be very good for the VRM temps. So far, these seem to have the best overclocking results. Most poeople hitting 1160-1200

Asus= (DCU2) Full cover block available. Not much info on these, but theyappears to use the same cooler as the 290 series, which was a poor performing cooler. I have seen very few purchasing the Asus card. Overclock results seem to be average so far, but have very little data to make a general claim.

Asus= (Strix) Unsure on waterblocks with these... stock cooling is good. Very little OC information, but from what I have seen, they are average. Probably in line with Sapphire when it comes to binning.

Well it definitely seems like the Sapphire is the preferred card...I just wish it looked better...very bland looking card.

Haven't bought anything yet haha! I am deciding between MSI R9 390 or going all out on a Gigabyte 980TI...

If you go GTX 980 Ti look up coil whine for the Gigabyte cards.

Many users have reported this issue with Gigabyte... Even that G1 card of theirs. It doesn't effect every card but enough to warrant some research.

Yea I know the Zotac cards are good too...I think a 980TI may be a bit out of my budget anyways - that is a lot of money for just a graphics card when it seems like the 390 will run anything I want anyways. The MSI 390 might be the best option for me - I think it would look good with the ASUS Hero VIII motherboard too.

 

I wish ASUS would fix their dang cooling issues with their cards.

I got the asus r9 390 to go with my hero vii. Didn't know about their past issues but no issues on the 390. Doesn't seem like a generic cooler this time at least and runs bf4 in ultra at 1080 all bells and whistles also gta v. Been happy with mine, no whine or abnoxious fan noise (can't hear it over the 250 h20 cooler fans at 1000-1200 rpm).

Oh and their 270x served me well for a few years before I got tempted to upgrade so maybe just the 290 was a miss.
