Probably the same way you did.  When you were younger at some point you touched something hot and it hurt.  You then learned to recognize that hot things = pain.  Avoidance of pain just became ingrained and you now have no idea how that programming originally got there, it's been so long that you chock it up to common sense.  But when you yell at a 2 year old for climbing into the oven, you are yelling out of fear for that child, not because they are too stupid to avoid being burned because they don't understand the concept of hot = pain yet.

So if he hasn't had the chance to read up on, see for himself, or learn about how the SSD works, or what happens when certain conditions are met (simply because he hasn't encountered them yet), it doesn't mean he is a dumbass.  It just means he didn't know and wanted to know but knew it wouldn't cause him bodily harm or the risk was negligible toward whatever values his recognizes at important.

I'd say the dumbass is someone without the basic situational awareness to recognize this very reoccurring behavior in humanity.

Now, if he goes and does this again tomorrow and is surprised by the result, mock away.

Did you just use 213 words to call me a dumbass?

It actually took longer finding the Guinness World Records address . I did read your post, I get what you are saying I just felt that the OP who created this thread was inviting a little mockery. I still don't ever recall sticking my hand in the fire.

You learned fire is hot, you learned you get burned by heat from something else most likely.  Could have been boiling water, a hot iron, a stove, kids touch any number of things before the age of 3 that teach them these things.

There are certain things you don't do out of irrational fear that keeps you from harming yourself.  Sometimes a fear in hights keeps you from getting hurt from falling even if you haven't yet learned that falling can harm you.  Later in life someone teaches you either through example or evidence that falling can hurt you.  But you still attribute the knowledge as common sense.

I'm not going to lie, I chuckled when I first read the post as well.  I'm just saying that this doesn't equate to learning about fire.  It equates to experience or a lack of it.

I'm pretty sure that the 90% of people here didn't know what would have happened if the SSD was pulled out of a running system. Most would have assumed that the system would have shut down immediately. It didn't happen now you all know the results. Now if curiosity makes me a dumbass then so be it.

Am I the only one who actually thinks it's pretty cool to know?

I would have thought it'd just freeze but that's not what happened - I learned something today.

Jebes, stop calling him a dumbass or telling him he's stupid for doing such a thing "BECAUSE I KNEW THIS ALREADY" - you probably didn't for sure, thus you did learn something today.

OP, thanks for this thread.

So many things I could write here... things like this.

I found out that fire was because someone told me. People usually don't come to you and tell you what happens when a SSD is pulled out of a running system.

Exactly, and since I don't think anyone has done this him or herself, they didn't know for sure - that's why I want to thank YOU - you proved something, not just based on a theory.

But he couldn't record it to anything...

(I guess he could stream it, but opening programs would probably give errors since there is no drive to access them)

You can record it with camera or a phone...

Yeah me too.

I wasn't having a go at you either, you knew nothing good was going to come from it, so in that sense it wasn't a great idea so just felt it was a thread were we poke some fun.

I never called you a dumbass by the way, insane would have been the word I would have used  but not in an offensive way. Linus and Slick kind of did this experiment in the early days of the forum by throwing a thumb drive at one of the SSDs in the server hosting the forum resulting in many lost posts

I actually did find it interesting, I would have known a BSOD was imminent, but when I didn't know. Kind of wished you tried to launch something, but don't, I get the feeling it can't be too good for it.

I know it causes harm to the SSD that is why I use a cheap ADATA 64gb ssd for it.

Cool, yeah I had the feeling that there wasn't anything important on it and you could risk losing it.

Was actually a nice experiment, hard to find out any info on it when you Google it, again hope you didn't take any offense from my comment, was said with the best intentions :)

It was an interesting experiment and was performed shortly after your new system build.  So you really didn't have anything to loose, other than maybe corrupting the fresh OS install.  And your drive is most likely fine and drive/OS not corrupted.

To me it's not really any different than if I lost power to my computers, like in a storm.  And that happens pretty regularly here in Houston.  Except you were able to prove that the OS still functions to some minimal degree while the system is on but the drive removed.  Pretty interesting actually.
