MSI Z170A Gaming Pro full RGB motherboard

We've seen the MSI X99 Godlike motherboard a while back with it's RGB colors, now MSI has introduced another one, this time for the upcoming Intel Skylake. The MSI Z170A Gaming Pro runs on socket 1151 for the upcoming Intel Skylake cpu such as the Core i5 6600K, Core i7 6700K, as well as the rest of the Skylake-S line up. The board features 4 dimm slots using DDR4 up to 3300MHz (o.c.) at 64GB max. 2x PCIe x16, 2x PCIe x1 and 3x PCI. The board also has a total of 6 SATA ports, with 2 of them part of SATA Express. The positionin of the SATA ports might be a turn away for many as long graphic cards will interfere with it, right angle will be the best choice. That SATA Express port is in a odd place, but it shouldn't be that bad as you can still have access to it.

While most board like the current H97 or Z97 having M.2, sadly this board does not have it. On the Lan, it features MSI's Lan protect, which has a anti-surge protection port up to 15KV (KiloVolts). The board is E-ATX due to the light stripe attached at the end of it, no words on whether if the heatsink itself (them red areas) are RGB.

I personally love RGB on everything so I will order 8

Entire black heatsink would make more sense, as the RGB colors can light up beneath it, similar to the MSI X99 Godlike. Would make a better match with the color theme build you're going for.

It actually would go well with green, as it is the complimentary colour of red.

 

It also blends with orange/yellow and purple/magenta.

Three of my four monitors are still using DVI -- granted two of them are 7 and 10 years old, and the third one also has other ports, but dual link DVI was the most convenient. I personally hate the DVI/VGA connector since they're a pain in the ass, and would love it if everything switched to DP, but a lot of (most) people still have DVI/VGA monitors, so while they can just get an adapter it's easier to just include support for them. Plus there is no downside to the standard (well, there is, but none that matter on those devices) other than the fact that the connectors suck.

Three of my four monitors are still using DVI -- granted two of them are 7 and 10 years old, and the third one also has other ports, but dual link DVI was the most convenient. I personally hate the DVI/VGA connector since they're a pain in the ass, and would love it if everything switched to DP, but a lot of (most) people still have DVI/VGA monitors, so while they can just get an adapter it's easier to just include support for them. Plus there is no downside to the standard (well, there is, but none that matter on those devices) other than the fact that the connectors suck. 

 

The downside is wasteful backsides on graphics cards, resulting in either less airvents on the back or the inability to make a watercooled card, 1 slot. But even worse it usually results in fewer DP ports. I get using older monitors in eyefinity setups, but a cheap DP adapter solves that in a second. If adaptors where cheaper and included more, it would be no problem to force out obsolete standards faster and sooner.

Same goes for motherboards. My z97 has a vga port. I really don't understand why. Who would use VGA on a system using such a new CPU/chipset? It just clutters up the back and makes the board more expensive.

DVI replaced VGA in 1999. How legacy do we need things to be? No wonder Apple is taking over everything. DVI is useless. HDMI and DP is the only thing you need. You can even use a passive converter to DVI for legacy to DP.

 

Also why does this board have red painted parts, if you're supposed to use whatever colour you want? I hate everything about this board.

I use DVI for my monitor.

See why didn't they go with either white or even better translucent plastic accents? Then it could have been the motherboard to trump them all in terms of looks since changing the LEDs would also change the accents
