Can you overclock a GTX 970 to a 980(Ti) ?

FineVisionz

Can you overclock a GTX 970 to get around the same performance as the GTX 980 or the 980 Ti.

If It couldn't OC to a GTX 980 or 980 Ti,  could you over clock a 980 to get the same performance as a 980 Ti?

Thanks

Don't think a 970 is that good.

@Tim Drake said his stock (reference) 980 performs better than his OC'ed 970.

Only if you overclock it extremely high, as in @Gofspar levels does it seem to perform the same as a stock 980.

No, the highest overclock for the 970 (FTW) still cannot match a non overclocked 980 or 980ti also, that's also a non overclocked 980 and 980ti you could get even more performance once overclocked. I don't know why you would compare a 970 overclocked to a 980ti non overclocked but, meh.

the performance gap is insane between the 970 and 980ti.

look at the reative performance between cards.

Heavily oced 970 can barely touch stock 980...

Barely is incorrect.

It's not far from it if OCed enough and still makes a 970 heavily overclocked much better value than a 980 stock so..

How OCed is that 970?

By heavily OCed I would be referring to 1550-1600MHz levels.

An overclocked 970 can reach a stock 980's performance in a lot of games, but still you could just overclock the 980 too, however that wont reach 980Ti performance levels.

Not all 970s are great overclockers due to silicon lottery, also lets not forget if you do get lucky with 980 you can easily push it to 1500 - 1600 MHz and rape oced 970.

You CAN, but it's not necessarily going to be easy or do-able with an air cooler. To get a 980 to the performance of a 980Ti you would probably need to use liquid nitrogen.

This is where I get confused.

My MSI GTX 970 that was clocked way higher than that performed much worse than my stock 980.

Don't even think about buying a 970, much less a 980, with that cpu.

Oh, okay then.

In that case if you plan on getting a 980, get a R9 Fury (non-X). Literally shits on the 980 for the same price.

A 390 will also beat the crap out of a 970.

@mattonfire @Vrbas @Tim Drake @

MiniboisCould I OC a 980 to get the same performance as the 980 Ti but without the extra Vram ?

As others stated no not near it honestly.

If you are in the market for a card and want nvidia go with a 970 or 980ti. The 980 isn't really worth it unless you can pick one up near the price of a 970 of course.

What are you experiencing? I'm gaming fine, nice performance and my OC (1550/3950) is working since 350.12...
