I just made a Core 2 Quad into a light VM machine. It only has 8GBs, but it is enough to run a few lower end VMs that I need. I hate letting perfectly good tech go to waste.

stuff it into a SFF case put a lightweight linux on it and use it as a HTPC

I still have an old Core2Duo 6400 with an old Radeon HD 5670 and 4GB RAM running as a backup LAN-machine, or as a Minecraft-PC for my daughter. 

LAN means usually games like COD2, C&C Generals, etc. ....so older titles. But it still runs fine.

Or use it as an office PC. That also should work perfectly fine. I had it setup like that.

 

That PC I am talking about is the first one I built myself and that was in 2007. Before that I always had prebuilt ones.

1 cores + motherboard igpu (i need a gpu) - bad

1 core + HD 4350 (now i need a cpu) - bad

2 cores + HD 4350 (now i need a gpu) - not that bad

2 cores + HD 4670 (i still need a gpu) - is cool, but still bad

2 cores + HD 5670 (i need a cpu) - good

4 cores + HD 5670 (and now i need the best gpu) - the 4 core experience is a new world  so is really good

4 cores + HD 7850 (i am in heaven)  :lol:

Virtual Machine = VM. But with only 2GB RAM, I don't think that is viable.

You could use it as a spare web browsing system.
