make their own operating system

It doesn't cost much money, just needs programming skill. Anyone else think that a couple of LTT peeps should try and program a basic operating system?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

as i suggested in another thread, why not make laptops :D 450-600$ (or maybe more...or 500$ for the build and 100$ for the monitor) budget, but it's gotta be using desktop parts and a screen, Not allowed to use intergrated graphics or low power CPU's such as Atoms or U or S series chips (maybe a 65W TDP minimum), it'll not just be rated on performance, but practicality, looks, ease of use....etc, got to make their own cases for them as well.

so maybe test them out by having them use their systems for a day or two, do a bit of editing and gaming on them?.

im rather tired so forgive me if i cant explain it better :')

Again, this shouldn't be scrapyard, but it is something they should do. Anyone else think this is interesting?

  • 2 months later...

I just saw a NCIX video that Linus did, and he used the phrase "Pimp My Dell" to refer to an old video where he had tried unsuccessfully upgrade a prebuilt system.  I think that this would make an excellent third Scrapyard Wars.

Scrapyard Wars III: Pimp My Dell.

Start with a pre built off of ebay or out of someone's basement, and then try to turn it into a gaming machine.  You would need to budget first the base computer, and then have a separate budget for the parts.  The initial PC would need to be big box Dell, HP, Compaq, E-machine or whatever, not just a PC that someone built and was selling.  The fun would be in watching the solutions to unexpected problems.  A quick look at ebay shows a complete system with an I5 2400 for less than $150 bucks, but the power supply isn't going to be enough to power a GTX 750 ti probably.  It would be interesting to see where the sweet spot was between CPU and graphics card.  How much can you skimp on CPU and still get playable framerates with a decent graphics card?  Do you get a great CPU in a proprietary case, and then spend some of your upgrade dough on a standard case?

It might be fun to have a junk pool too, some communal parts that have to be traded for with mutual agreement on the trade.

You might even be able to get a manufacturer to supply you with the PSUs for the builds.  Get someone like Corsair to donate and give viewers a discount code for 10% off on the website or something.  Manufacturers, if they have a direct sales channel like Corsair does, usually are selling a little high in the first place.  It would be good publicity, and Linus is without shame as a pitchman.

One last thing that I would suggest is taking more time between steps, or at least take a good couple weeks or more to find the initial system.  Buying used is about taking the time to find the right deal.  Film the whole thing, edit the whole thing, and then post the updates on a regular schedule.  That lets you say something like, subscribe so you don't miss the next episode next Friday.

Using Liquid Nitrogen for cooling, and then OC'ing as much as possible.

Why would that be a scrapyard wars episode? Not exactly cheap, or typical of what is expected.

I think a 'build you own case build would be amazing. No parts can come from prebuilt cases. (I would allow mobo stand offs) Same hardware in both, say an amd r9 290x and an amd fx 9590 due to their high thermal output. Points awarded for design (look of the case) how many standard parts are made (eg drive bays, hdd mounting areas, and cooling performance. Tallied all up on a board at the end Top Gear style.

Imagine removing a car bonnet and bending it into shape to use as the frame for a PC case. It would be awesome.

Maybe ghetto cooling. Everyone is given the same processor, with a goal to get the highest clock speed, no holds barred.

Then again, CPUs of the same model have still been known to overclock differently...

Does anyone know when the new episode will be out?

Cause it's something new, not seen everyday. Everything for a proper budget ofcourse.

I think the whole point of the series is that you take a regular scenario (e.g. building a PC or building a custom loop), but making it slightly ridiculous like not using any off the shelf water cooling parts, or building a rig for $300. It's interesting because it's something simple done complicated.

Liquid Nitrogen cooling is NOT a regular occurrence, besides from the fact that it can also be dangerous. I'd say that was more akin to a build log rather than a challenge.

I understand that Liquid Nitrogen isn't a regular occurrence, and that its dangerous to work with, but the series would be much more interesting exactly cause of that. It's something not used everyday for cooling PC's.
