There's even a topic that I'm looking through right now with the filezilla admins treating the users like they are idiots that don't know how to "hit the big decline button"

https://forum.filezilla-project.org/viewtopic.php?t=32945

the file WAS 5 megs!

I think it's called "OpinionSpy" more commonly and this is like a second wave of it. I'd research that.

would it effect the performance of my computer ?

Frankly, I would nuke your OS and do a format + fresh install. It might not affect performance, but it most certainly is collecting data on your usage. It could even track passwords/install a keylogger, try to intercept encrypted data connections (Like online banking, or using Steam), etc.

You should definitely not just let it sit there.

That's... pretty much a really horrible decision. See above. Even if you don't "see" it doing anything, it's likely collecting a ton of data that will periodically be sent back to "home base", probably to then be sold to third parties.

Both of you should format your drives and reinstall your OS, like, yesterday.

i backtracked into the home file and sudo rm -Rf every single fucking thing in there. there were a bunch of things that said rules.xml with differnet numbers. it would not let me trash so i nuked with sudo -rm and the onion went away. :D

Personally, I would still nuke the OS, since, can you really be sure you got everything? Legit malware has a knack for installing itself or making copies all over your system, especially into obscure locations that you might not think to check. Totally your call of course - if you feel confident that you got it all, then sure. But I personally wouldn't take the risk.
