What's a LAN party?

I've seen people refer to LAN's - and not in the networking sense. What is it? A bunch of people bringing their computers together to a person's house? Like a car show, only for computers? I don't get it.

Yes. LAN is just an event where you play on local network.

LAN party is where you party and play on local network.

 

The point is that for example in shooter games you have no ping, true player skill is revealed.

LAN = Local Area Network. As opposed to WAN = Wide Area Network.

A LAN party is just a get-together of gamers who all bring their PC (or console or whatever) and play multiplayer games together. Typically they play on LAN, meaning they don't play online but inside their own network under the router. So no everyone is connected to 1 router

a bunch of people go to one place and conect to the same network and play games 

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

There are always LAN tournaments streamed over weekends on Twitch.tv.

Dreamhack summer happened just recently too.

Hahaha I'm sorry. But are you news to PC's or just super young? LANs are the go to thing for PC gamers. They were really big in the 80's and 90's, still big. People would go to LAN Parties like 2 a weekend and they would just be a bunch of guys sitting in a room for hours on end drinking and yelling and laughing. I suggest going to one, they are great!

Yeah - pretty much this. Was a much bigger thing a few decades back when Internet speeds were way slower. Playing CS 1.6 with a ping of 100 or worse when gaming via Internet? not nice, but standard. That's why you met for lan parties. Filesharing via LAN when a 1GB USBdrive was considered big, was friggin' awesome. Carrying those 19 Inch CRT Monitors though... not so much ;)

Yeah - pretty much this. Was a much bigger thing a few decades back when Internet speeds were way slower. Playing CS 1.6 with a ping of 100 or worse when gaming via Internet? not nice, but standard. That's why you met for lan parties. Filesharing via LAN when a 1GB USBdrive was considered big, was friggin' awesome. Carrying those 19 Inch CRT Monitors though... not so much ;)

I used to host them in my basement during high school. We'd have an average of 6-12 people every time. Think we hosted them from 2002-2006. My basement is usually cold but get 12 people with CRT monitors and a few Pentium 4 Extremes? Toasty.

 

Had one guy who refused to bring anything smaller than his 21" CRT. He turned that thing on and anyone sitting next to him had to move because it would bend the screens of monitors near it.

lol nope. Plus we had rules for what to bring. One monitor per person, network cable, peripherals, etc. I had my basement set up with a 24 port switch and cables dropping from the ceiling, hence why I hosted all the time.

 

Mind you no matter how many rules we had set out the garbage afterwards was atrocious, and there was always one asshat who brought a PC that had a serious issue which required me to spend a couple hours troubleshooting instead of playing.

Hahaha I'm sorry. But are you news to PC's or just super young? LANs are the go to thing for PC gamers. They were really big in the 80's and 90's, still big. Go back in time to mid-2008, chose a guy's house an hour away, haul the antec p180 that weighed ~70lbs in the car with the 4:3 monitor, get to house, have a million cat5 cables running everywhere with about 2 additional switches on the network, argue about what game to play over, eventually settle on cs:s and have 25 people join a random minigame server, voteban everyone else already on the server (top kek, especially when it's not a coordinated action at all by everyone on the lan), get tired, pack in cars to eat at mcdonalds, watch a movie that no one is really interested in, then go home. Lan party.

Hahaha I'm sorry. But are you news to PC's or just super young? LANs are the go to thing for PC gamers. They were really big in the 80's and 90's, still big. People would go to LAN Parties like 2 a weekend and they would just be a bunch of guys sitting in a room for hours on end drinking and yelling and laughing. I suggest going to one, they are great!

Most games now are taking the LAN aspect out of it. Does anyone know of some good titles that has not happened to yet?

Are you talking new titles or classic or in between? A lot of games still have it but it isn't as easy as clicking find LAN games

Are you talking new titles or classic or in between? A lot of games still have it but it isn't as easy as clicking find LAN games

Both, I play alot of unreal 2004 and far cry with my friends in the school dorm. In most titles of that time LAN was just another option in the multiplayer settings. Most games (all fps games) that I have seen lately don't have that option at all. Or even just offline would be nice.

Wolfenstein ET is a great LAN Party game so is minecraft and Garry's Mod. Dirt 3 and Borderlands are fun. Basically every source game
