7970 running too hot!

rahulr1

I did a few tests with my 7970 running Planetside 2. First test was with a single 1080p display and the second with one 1080p and an idlling 1280x1024 display. With the two displays I hit 86C in-game and 55C idling. With just the 1080p display I hit 79C in-game and 39C idling. The idle temps for both sound about right but the in-game temps are certainly too high. Afterburner shows that:

Core Voltage: stock

Power Limit: +0

Core Clock: 951 (I OCed a bit)

Memory Clock: 1375

Fan Speed: Auto - ranges from 31 (idling) and only goes up to 39 in-game

A while ago I accidently fiddled with the fan speed on Afterburner and my 7970 made some REALLY worrying noises but I quickly shut down without saving any changes and it seemed fine afterwards. I'm just saying this if it might help.

I suspect it's the fan speed why is it only increasing by 8% and what can I do to reduce the temps.

All help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Set your own custom fan curves. Is the reference one?

That's normal for the dual monitor setup..

I have a PowerColor 7970 V3 non-reference. Can someone recommend a fan curve for me?

The best thingh you can do is raise the fan speed so that it's still at an acceptable noise level. As you said, It might be dust, but I doubt it. You can also try and change the thermal paste. This will probably grant you a couple of degress.

That said, 82C is not to hot for a graphicscard. You can begin worring if you hit around 90C

Best fan curve.... Slooowly increase fan speed until about 70-75c then shoot up to 100% at about 90c. Its ganna be loud, but you have headphones. When under a moderate load, should be pretty quiet.

Change the thermal paste.

Those temps are fine. But just turn up your fan speed on Afterburner.
