OnePlus 2 confirmed to use a version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 that doesn’t overheat

I've heard this one before, to be honest. A 810 that doesn't overheat? Didn't Xiaomi/Meizu say that for one of theirs and then fail to deliver? Sony is currently failing with the Z3+/Z4. We all know that HTC was the first to fall on the SD810 sword. Very hard to take what anyone says about solving the 810s heat issues seriously when the chip just plain overheats and hampers the experience no matter how it gets used. At this point I'm thinking that even a gigantic tablet with all the room it has for thermal dissipation would also have trouble keeping this chip under control.

Curiously enough, OnePlus is pegging the version they’re using as “v2.1″, a moniker that seems to indicate they’ll be stuffing a refined unit inside the phone. They say they’ve worked closely with Qualcomm to reduce the heat output of the Snapdragon 810, and so there should be no worries for anyone who might have seen those early stories about companies having overheating issues.

OnePlus went into a bit of detail about the thermal gel used to make sure things never get out of hand:

They also baked in some software-based optimization to ensure the CPU is never being overworked. Sounds all fine and dandy to us. Heat issues aside, the Snapdragon 810 deserves attention as a top performing chipset for 2015 and we’re glad the two sides came together to make the improvements to make sure no one has any issues using it.

Inside the 2, the 810 consists of several CPU processors. Layered on top of these processors is both thermal gel and graphite placed across different areas of the phone. This graphite ensures that heat generated from the processors will dissipate evenly, as opposed to being concentrated and leading to performance issues. After rigorous testing, the 2 meets the industry standard for phone temperature, even with hours of use.

I believe part of the issue is also Lollipop still causes some really fucked up utilization with google play services and well... lots of other things.

Maybe with kitkat or M it would actually work.

I'm planning on buying it after the reviews come out, and I agree Google totally dropped the ball with Lollipop it almost bricked my brothers Note 3.

People have strange definitions of overheating. I define it as hardware performing worse than advertised because of the temperature getting too high. So for example the A57 cores in the HTC M9 are advertised as being clocked at 2GHz. I would say the M9 overheats whenever it has to cap the frequency at below 2GHz for temperature related reasons. However, some people think "overheating" just means "it is very hot when I hold it in my hand". My guess is that OnePlus is going with the latter definition, and so did everyone who were defending the M9 before too.

If I had to bet I would bet on OnePlus using a revised version which might have better thermal performance, they might also use better cooling than other phones, but in the end the thing stopping the chip from melting your hand will be very aggressive throttling.

I am still glad to hear that the OnePlus 2 will use the Snapdragon 810. It might not be everything I wished for it to be, but it is still the best SoC available (other than Samsung and Apple exclusive chips). I can't blame OnePlus for using the best they can get their hands on.

It's still going to overheat. Unless they're going to throttle it to the performance point to an 808 which begs the question why didn't they use a lesser chip in the first place. I say Qualcomm is selling the 810 for cheap just to get rid of inventory.

I wouldn't go that far on the last part. but I would say the Snapdragon 808 would have been a much better chip for the task.

@LAwLz So you consider the battery as part of the hardware as well right?  Cause heat is no friend to any battery that I'm aware of, neither in the the short term of single discharges or their long term life span.  A hot phone is not a good thing.  People on a budget could be adversely affected here, so lets not make light of the people and manufacturers steering away from the 810.

Need independent reviewers, I think it's particularly important here.

I'm pretty sure the Z3+ uses the same chip, and it too has issues with overheating. So. I imagine this will as well.
Sad, really, that a company would blindly ignore the warning signs all around them.

I wonder if they'll just clock it really slow. I guess we'll see the Find 9 soon as well, since I imagine they'll be closely designed.

Well, at least you can "watercool" the Z3+ :P

If they're working software side to try and alleviate a hardware problem then you already know this thing is going to throttle like all hell.

At least they considered the overheating when designing the phone. This combined with a slight underclock should do the trick.

A version of the 810 that doesn't overheat or throttle is a under-clocked one.

It's a shame Samsung doesn't quite have the excess capacity to sell their chips, cause the industry would probably love to use them.

Intel too. This 810 fiasco might send more business their way.

Qualcomm really screwed up in the blind rush to have a powerful 64 bit chip.
