AMD Phenom II x6 1055T vs Intel Core i5 4460

I currently have a 1055t. It's been with me for about 5 years and I want to upgrade to something better. I can't really afford a 4690k, which would really be the best path for me, but I'm wondering if getting an i5 4460 will be good aswell. I don't just want better performance in games, I also want better performance in video editing, photo editing, streaming my games, etc.

stick with it for a while longer. Intel is soon releasing a new generation CPUs. (4-6 months?). Summer is also closing in, meaning summer sales. Wait a little and see if you can spot a 4690k within your price range. It is a good upgrade, but you shouldnt skimp out if paitience can net you a better catch.

Also remember to check more then one site for prices, and lastly, see if you can find some physical retail shop with processors for sale. These places can in some cases offer a better deal then online vendors.

Definitely worthwhile since you're talking a couple generations newer. But I'll second @Prysin's comment in waiting a little longer. Not only for summer sales, but just to save up a little extra money. The reason I say that is since you're talking about video editing and the like, memory is also going to be your friend on this -- no sense in having a more powerful CPU if you're going to choke it off with not having enough memory. On that mark I'd recommend 16GB if you can spring for it as getting 16GB now will be less expensive overall than getting only 8GB now (or worse, 4GB) and upgrading later. Plus if you save up enough, you might even be able to spring for a 4690K when you do buy. Be sure to take advantage of bundle discounts as well, as that could stretch your budget further still.

 

ETA: Just saw that the X6 uses DDR3 memory (thought it was still on DDR2), so depending on how much you already have, you'd probably just be reusing what you currently have instead of buying new.

Did you factor in what the x6 is currently going for on ebay?  Unlike my junk your stuff actually will sell on ebay  so a 4690k might be in reach. Just the x6 chip is going for 160 to 190, a few at 80 and the heatsink is selling for 30 bucks.

The jump in single-threaded performance with the 4460 will be significant, on the order of 50% depending on what your overclock is on the 1055t.  If you can crank the 1055t up to 3.8-4GHz, the difference in multi-threaded performance will be less, something like 10-20%. 

 

IMO the 4690K is worth the extra money; an overclocked 4690K is a huge upgrade on the 4460, to say nothing of the 1055t. 

 

It sounds like we're in the same boat; I've got a Phenom II X4 and am looking to upgrade myself.  I'm holding out to see what Skylake brings before I make a decision.

No it's not.  The 860K has better single-threaded performance (~40% when both are at stock, ~20% when both are overclocked).  The 1055t will win in multi-threaded performance due to the two additional cores, though.  Then you have to consider that the FM2+ platform gives you PCI-E gen 3 and other modernities.

 

Don't get me wrong... I wouldn't recommend the 860K for anything but an office/web browser/light gaming computer.  But it's still better than any Phenom.

The 4460 will be much faster than the 1055t even in multithreaded workloads. The 4570s is slightly slower than the 4460 so you can expect an even bigger performance increase: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/147?vs=1368

I had X6 on 4.0 Bought an I7 4790K. Was blown out the socks. Hands down for I5. Even 4460 will make your dick rock hard.

BUTT, i would wait for summer sales as a friend above mentioned. CPU is an investment, don't fuck it up and you'll set for years.

I got both the X6 and 4460

if you can OC the X6 to 3.5-3.8ghz then it's not worth to go for the I5, I've only test some game (GTA V 4460 = 50FPS, X6 3.5Ghz = 60FPS, BF4 same same. watchdogs same same)

X6 with OC is still a BEAST  B)

if you are above 3.6ghz then it is faster than the i5 multi thread.
