Hyperthreading allows for unused CPU resources to be leveraged by an additional pipeline, it can't really be "obsolete" unless a similar technology comes along with much better performance gains.

Hi,

My friend said that hyperthreading is obselete as apparently it slows down the CPU in things like P95. I said that P95 is shit, and he said that it's incredibly well scripted. 4 PEOPLE GANGED UP ON ME TO SAY THAT IT WAS OBSELETE. Please provide me with graphs showing that it's not, along with some single threaded i7 graphs to show that what they said was utter fucking bullshit. A full explanation of why it's not would be nice too.

You're friends are just coming up with bullshit to justify not being able to afford an i7 themselves lol.

It's very useful on i3 CPU's for gaming, but not as much for i7 CPU's on gaming.

Just tell them games use more than 2 threads now.

Moar cores is better but hey l, more threads is like a 10% to 20% bump sometimes.

Compare the i7 to i5 in any of those benchmarks, bearing in mind that Hyperthreading and 2 MB cache is all that differentiates the i7.

 

That's just one random example. Take any well-threaded benchmark where an i7 and an i5 appear and you can see the difference Hyperthreading makes.

IMO its stupid to say it slows things down. that means the I5 would be faster then the I7, and you're paying 100$ to get a slower chip.

IK. If something used single threads, then it wouldn't use cores 4-7 (if the first core was core 0)

I have heard of a few random cases where Hyperthreading seemed to be a very minor detriment to performance, probably in older software that didn't know how to cope with it. That's obviously rare. I have no idea why anyone cares about P95 (…Prime95?) performance, but if they do they should just turn off Hyperthreading or buy an i5 instead if it's actually an issue.

 

The better question here is why anyone would say Hyperthreading is worthless as a blanket statement, when it's clearly a much-loved and effective technology in professional computing. It can be useless in whatever niche thing they care about and still be valuable to the rest of the world.

Nothing is obsolete until something replaces it. Floppy driver only became obsolete when optical discs came out.

exactly. with any technology there will be SOME cases where general improvements make things worse off. its like how crossfire/sli help 99% of the time, but there are programs that will run worse with the extra power.

Certainly not obsolete.....but definitely a little bit hyped imo


I don't see people really needing to give a shit about it unless they plan on having a workstation computer.

For general use, gaming, or managing a small youtube channel at home, you really don't need hyperthreading.
