I actually know a few people that still say "ATI cards". I kind of respect them for that, for some reason.

I think that's partly to distance them from AMD. Their GPU's are good, but their CPU's leave a lot to be desired.

ATi was a graphic card manufacture before it was bought by AMD. Their very successful card was the ATI 9700Pro and its smaller bro the ATi 9500Pro. The 9700 Pro cost $300, (you won't get a high-end card these days for that cheap) and the 9500 Pro at $200. It was the very first card to support DirectX 9. Now if you compare that card to today's card DirectX might not look that great, but during that time, it looked amazing. ATi also made All in Wonder graphic cards, what that has is a GPU along with a built in TV tuner that lets you hook up your TV or other A/V devices like VCR or DVD player, so you can watch TV on your monitor or record TV shows, VHS movies, etc into your computer. During that time, ATi itself build and sells their cards and well as 3rd party manufactures. Cards that are built by ATi themselves says "Built by ATi" and card by others says "Power by ATi". My very first card was a ATi Rage 128XL, it has just 2MB of vram. later on got a ATi Rage 128 that has 32MB of vram.

ATI was when AMD didnt have goons.

I believe that ATI is the name AMD used to use.

No. ATI is pretty much the old school Radeon.

ATI is technically AMD

No no no no.

AMD wanted to expand into the graphics market. To do so, they bought ATI.

ATI is not technically AMD, AMD has business in servers, memory, ssds, gpus, cpus, apus, networking etc.

So AMD is not ATI, nor ATI AMD.

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

ATI used to be a GPU manufacturer, then they got bought by AMD.

NOTE: They were separate companies (from different countries even) and not related at all until ATI was bought.

Damn young hipsters these days; don't even know the difference between AMD and ATi (yes the lower case " i ")....damn I feel old now.

More background info:

  • ATi was a Canadian company.
  • When Voodoo got acquired by nVidia, the former employees parted ways; some stuck with NVidia, and some when to ATi. That is why we have SLI and CrossfireX technology.
