intel or amd?

Hey guys, i'm new to the forum, an i thought that you guys could help me building my pc.

Currently i'm using my HP envy laptop for gaming, but the thermals are stupid. So I decided to upgrade to a Desktop.

Here's two options that i need help:

Intel Build:

- Core I7-4790k

- Gskill Ripjaws x DDR3-1866MHz 2x4GB

- MSI Z97-G45 GAMING

- Asus Strix GTX 970 - DC2OC-4GBD5

- Cooler Master Nepton 240M

- Nox Hummer 80+ bronze 850W

AMD Build:

- FX 8350 4.0Ghz BE

Gskill Ripjaws x DDR3-1866MHz 2x4GB

- MSI 970 Gaming

MSI GTX 960 Gaming 4G

- Cooler Master Nepton 240M

Nox Hummer 80+ bronze 650W

For the both builds the HDD, the SSD and the case are the same:

- Corsair Obsidian 450D

- Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA III

- Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD

Tell what do you guys think, and what changes would you make.

Thanks fo helping.

The intel build is way better for gaming, not because of the intel but because of the better graphics card.

Çomparing the 8350 with the 4790k is like comparing a fiat uno with a ferrari.

More like a BMW 325i to an i8

I don't really recommend msi boards... I remember I had the same bad experience with other people in the z87 platform. Just get a gigabyte z97x ud5 or ud3. If asus, z97 pro or a. Asrock (recommend, I have one) z97 extreme 4,6, or 9. Just get one that fits ur price. There isn't much difference between gigabyte or he asus. The asrock 4 has no thunderbolt and 1 Ethernet. The 6 has 2 ethernet, 1 Intel and realtek and has thunderbolt. The 9 has 4 way sli support, 2 Intel Ethernet and 2 thunderbolt.

TL;DR: oh yea, and go Intel.

No contest, the Intel is the more powerful system. Better GPU and better CPU.

As other people mentioned, if you are just gaming with it you can probably get away with a i5 instead of an i7.

If you get easily offended by people on the Internet there is something really wrong with you. You focus on the opinions of a few people instead of worrying about why you have a terrible taste in video games.

Heyyo,

Yeah I agree with the others... it's not even a fair fight dude lol. The FX-8300 series is better for battling the i5 CPUs.

For gaming though? You're better off with stepping down to an Intel i5 CPU and slapping a GTX 980 on as your GPU. On average? Most current games don't get a massive benefit from anything more than four CPU working threads and that saying is true for both AMD and Intel. Otherwise? If you're cool with AMD GPUs? You could also eye up an AMD R9 290X Two-Way CrossfireX combo with an Intel i5 CPU. That would be some serious horsepower. :)

For reference? Just look up any Linus Tech Tips video on YouTube for their benchmarks of CPU threads.

Also, if DirectX 12 has shown me personally what will make a bigger difference in the future? It's GPU power.

http://www.3dmark.com/aot/15670

Albeit, it is only a basic API overhead benchmark of how many draw calls per second between the CPU & GPU combo... but my draw calls per second in DirectX 11 between single threaded and multi-threaded wasn't insanely different compared to offloading most of the API calls in DirectX 12 directly to my GPU.

If you want I could even run 3DMark's 3D API Overhead Test with hyper-threading disabled which would turn my Intel i7-3770k into an Intel i5 and show you that it probably won't make the craziest difference. CPU's on PC Gaming are quite overrated these days... just not as overrated as RAM is though lol.

...Do I dare ask why the AMD build has a weaker PSU than the Intel build. Or you just feel like slapping everyone in the face...

i thought that the amd, having a weaker GPU, a 650 psu would be enough.

ps: sorry fo the slap :P

btw, i forgot to mention,

But as a more future reliable gaming machine, the intel would be better?

and considering that there is a 300 series of amd gpu's comming out soon, should i just wait it out?

Both builds have their problems, in my opinion. Like others have said, i7's are unnecessary for gaming. You won't benefit from hyperthreading.

850watt PSU is overkill. Even for most SLI setups. You can save money here.

Water cooling adds a lot of cost with little benefit. You'd ultimately be better served getting a decent air cooler and putting the money you saved towards other things, mainly a stronger GPU.

AMD FX is no longer good value for gaming and shouldn't be considered for a new build.

You could wait out until DirectX 12 and R9 300 series come out, if the laptop can hold on a little longer. If not, then now is the moment.

Laptop: Intel Core i5-4200H, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce 840M

Desktop: Intel Core i3-6100, 8GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce GTX 750 Ti

get the intel build, with an i5 if you're only going to do gaming.

i'd also suggest getting a lower wattage power supply, with a better 80+ rating, and a more reputable brand.

i have a 4790K, and GTX 970, and my 750W power supply is barely noticing it.

I've always used AMD On most of my systems... but intel is just too much. Reason why? Your paying for the name... not their products...

MOTHERBOARD: Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 5 CPU: INTEL G4400 CASE: DIYPC-SOLO-T1-R

HDD: 160GB SEAGATE SSD: 128GB SAMSUNG PRO 850

 POWER SUPPLY: 550W ANTEC
