AMD Card.

Go to solution Solved by minibois,

Hey.

So I know nothing about AMD cards but I decided at some point in the near future I am going to do an AMD build.

What would be the equivalent AMD card to the 980? Also I know not the right thread but the equivalent of a X99 motherboard?

AMD's highest single GPU card is the 290X (8GB version is not worth it IMO). Otherwise you have the R9 295X2, but that is 2 290X GPU's designed into 1 card.

I believe the AMD equivalent to X99 is 990X, but I think Intel is better at such budget. (For gaming and editing)

EDIT: these are no equivalents, but they come the closest.

The Nvidia or Intel 'counterparts' are better

Equivalent to a 980, no. There may be something released in the R9 3xx series that can compete with a 980 but it is doubtful.

currently there is no X99 competitor. The FX line is the latest and even that is many years old so the boards that run them are also years old. There is no DDR4 AMD capable CPU/Motherboard at the moment.

As for a 980 competitor. The 290x is neck and neck when its on 4K but at 1080p the 290x looses to the 980. But I guess you can wait for the R9-300 series to see how that goes.

Why? As I said I am just looking to build an AMD system as I have always built Nvdia based stuff. I already have an I7 5930K so just want to do something different.

AMD doesn't have a "same generation" yet. The fastest single-GPU card they have is still last generation's R9 290X, which is about equal to a GTX 970. They have only responded to the 900 series so far with price cuts.

I meant why would I get hate?

Because everyone on the forum is pretty much against anybody buying AMD CPUs. because for most people they are the wrong choice compared to Intel (especially for gaming!!)

besides you already have a decent PC, so its hard to understand why you randomly want to build some second AMD rig.. it doesnt work or do anything differently to your current PC other than cost you money and perform worse

Lol fair enough.

Was just looking at prices expecting them to be cheap but they aren't really.

Surely there is a same generation AMD equivalent.

no, all of AMD's chipsets are years old, and X99 is extremely recent

also there is no AMD motherboard with the features of X99 and there is no AMD CPU that even comes close to the performance of the CPUs on x99

and for GPUs there is no AMD equavalent to the 980 because the 300 series has not been released yet

their best GPU is the 290x which is basically the same performance of a 780ti, the last generation of nvidia GPUs

the 295x2 is just a dual 290x, similar to the titan Z (because there is no dual 780ti, the titan black is the next closest, and the titan z is two titan blacks)

this is why AMD is losing so much money and falling behind

their products are old and perform like last gen

no they are not much cheaper, just a tiny bit, their GPUs remain mostly competitive, but their CPUs are really falling behind

Compared to Intel processors that actually perform similarly, no, AMD CPUs aren't particularly cheap. It's the persistent fallacy that an FX-8350 is comparable to a Core i5 that is the source of the "AMD is cheaper" theory.

They are providing a fairly attractive discount on their video cards these days, though.
