So I know nothing about AMD cards but I decided at some point in the near future I am going to do an AMD build. 

What would be the equivalent AMD card to the 980? Also I know not the right thread but the equivalent of a X99 motherboard?

AMD's highest single GPU card is the 290X (8GB version is not worth it IMO). Otherwise you have the R9 295X2, but that is 2 290X GPU's designed into 1 card.

I believe the AMD equivalent to X99 is 990X, but I think Intel is better at such budget. (For gaming and editing)

 

EDIT: these are no equivalents, but they come the closest.

The Nvidia or Intel 'counterparts' are better

Their 300 series GPUs should be out this summer, and we're supposed to see their new Zen architecture CPUs early 2016.  We'll just have to wait and see what kind of impact they make with those products.
