Google to replace Youtube API soon, as a result many device cannot use Youtube anymore

Google has announced that the Youtube Data v2 API will be replaced for a v3 version very soon, so soon that as of yesterday v2 is officially retired and will stop working in early to late may, devices and apps that still use the v2 API, will show the video above until its terminated, once v2 is terminated said devices and apps will only see gone 410 HTTP errors

 

affected devices include:

everything apple below iOS 7, the official app will not work and a browser with HTML5 support is the only way to access Youtube on those devices (though doesn't say third party apps cannot work so that maybe another solution, unless apple doesn't allow apps below iOS 7 to be submitted to the app store so i'm not sure)

Apple TV gen 2 and older

Google TV versions 3 and 4 need to be update to newer system version to continue to work, devices stuck on version 2 that can't update are out of Youtube support

and most notably several smart TV if not almost the grand majority that can't or wont be update by the manufacture, the user has to use the built in browser and hope it supports HTML5 video or flash, game consoles are also mentioned in here but i suspect the ones that won't work are old cheapo android consoles that run on some ancient version of it, not xbox or ps, ms and sony must have update those already

so if you have one of those i suggest to update the software to the most recent version possible if you can, that is if you use Youtube on those

 

edit: the reason they are replacing the API is that it offers better support for comments, captions and push notifications. they are essentially upgrading it and i guess they had to kill some stuff from v2 in order to do it

I'm confused. So android devices with version 3 or 4 are affected, or is it just 2? because all my devices run 4.x.x.

Does your YouTube app still update itself? If so then you're not effected.

Does your YouTube app still update itself? If so then you're not effected.

Sometimes i didn't know it updated itself, but yes.

no, its google TV, its different from android, it pretty much was a very shitty version of what became android TV, the software is completely different, youtube on android will work on any version of it that google decides to support

I know google tv is totally different, but is it android running versions 3/4 not able to work, or is it? that last device in the list seems misleading, i think.

oh, you mean android 3.x and 4.x, well 3 idk, 3 was a tablet only release, and 4 is to soon to get discontinued, over 3/4 of androids run 4 and above, android support is completely dependent on the youtube app devs, i went to gplay to see which is the minimum required for youtube, but it all says varies from device, so idk how low goes youtube to support old versions of android, and the yt support page doesn't mention android at all

I hope they still support 4.2, because my tablet runs it, stock, and that's all i watch youtube on. i'm considering putting cyanogenmod on it.

We all kinda knew about this regarding smart tvs but it will be funny to find many models on the wild advertised as supporting youtube only to find oops, not really not anymore anyway.

it probably has support to, if they have some sense of reason, the app should work on anything that isn't 5 years old, or that has enough power to playback video

If you look into these two APIs, you'll see

v2 is free and open, accessible via HTTP.

v3 is locked down and only apps that agree to certain things are allowed into the walled garden.

 

There goes my ability to cache videos to watch for later. They're likely looking to charge for that or they're coming out with a client with their own ad integration.
If I can get this client on Linux and Windows and not just freaking android then we're good, it might even be easier to get LMG their likes.

Come to think of it, v2 doesn't seem to serve ads at all.

There's been more than a year's worth of advance notice to get people to migrate off of the old API.

 

The new one brings better search and other user-facing features, as well as some security updates.
