If it was 2007 when PCI Express was emerging, and you bought PC with a PCI-Express compatible motherboard rather then dying AGP, that is future-proofing as even today 8 years in the future you are able to put in the latest and greatest graphics card.

People need to calm their tits.

Who says that?

Future-proofing exists it's just not guaranteed

What socket would that motherboard be?

Outdated çpus at this point.
Just don't heap out on the things that you can use over builds.

PSU , HDD and çase.

Thats future proofing.

they mean to say you cannot prevent your computer from being 'out of date' via compatibility, or at least i hope so.

because you most definitely can future proof by buying a titan x for 1080p 60fps if that's all you're going to play for the next decade.

you cannot however, buy a z97 motherboard now and expect a pcie gen4 gpu to run at gen4 specs etc (whenever this might be)

you can future proof, just not in every way. future proofing in performance is absolutely doable though.

Yeah, I've noticed this myself. The word is coined with hate and backlash if you use it lol.

I don't know why. Linus and many other tech youtubers believe in the whole future proofing concept. I have no problem with it if it's within reason.

Linus doesn't endorse future-proofing completely.

This doesn't mean that a PCIe Gen4 GPU won't run at all

What they're implying is that there is no futureproofing at all

I actually like it, I mean yes new tech will come out but yours will still work and be damn good at it.

LGA 775? Scrapyard Wars proved that Core 2 Quad/Extreme can still game well with today's GPUs.

Go back to PCIe 1.0 motherboard days. The CPUs would be utterly useless.

Put a 980 on a lga 775 system then lol.

Latest and greatest.

When I hear someone say they NEED this motherboard or this power supply for said future proofing I just believe that they just want it to make their computer seem more expensive or better. If you buy a motherboard today with PCIe 4.0 and use a 3.0 GFX and say you got the 4.0 for a better card in the future, that's still not future proofing, that's just a plan.

well that's why i specified "gen 4 specifications"

you can't buy the highest end z97 board ever right now and expect a gen4 pcie gpu to run at those specs. it just won't happen. that's why some people claim you can't future proof

you cannot futureproof your build in the sense of compatibility and features, but performance is 100% doable, like i said above.

you get what i mean though

i hope

You are welcome. Post your thoughts on it, its just point cloud streamed over net, just to be clear so nobody starts bashing for no reason like usually...

And it isn't like PCIe Gen4 is needed for normal use.

The solution is simple: Buy a console its future proof for atleast 8 years (or atleast so they say)   /s

Tell me, what system from 2007 would you say does not need an upgrade not to bottleneck the "latest and greatest" graphics cards to the point where it doesn't make sense to get one?

Plus, that's not the point. What if pcie was a doomed interface and AGP made a glorious comeback the year after? What if all the hype was for nothing? What if pcie 2.0 hadn't been retrocompatible for technical reasons? What if there was a fatal flaw in pcie design that made it unsafe to use? There was no way of knowing any of this in 2007. What will happen in the future is a mistery, ESPECIALLY in the tech world, and nothing can give you the certainty that it won't be obsolete quicker than you'd like. Therefore nothing is futureproof.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Sorry but PCIe 1.00 x8 and x16 is fine for gaming.
