External Strobe Flash

Hey, we're needing a external flash. Don't really know where to start or what I'm looking for. Just need it to flash as the picture is going off, but on a stand off to the side. I got the Canon RebelXS E05. Tell me if I need to clarify anything..

I don't really know. I believe either would work. Is it a choice of which to use, or do I HAVE to use one of those two?

if you know how to calculate, then you can just get a manual slave.
