So, I've something I feel the need to whinge about. "Gay traits", which are supposedly being like a teenage girl. If you want to be like that then that's fine. But what annoys me is the assumption that all gay people are like that. The one friend I told I was gay was completely surprised, because I wasn't "camp".

Whinge over. :D

On a side note generic teenage girls are mentally degrading to me.

Oh, we've had this discussion many times.

I think the last time I brought it up was when I mentioned Rob Halford and how my mum said I don't "act gay".

EDIT: Though, come on. When Halford was young, he was adorable.

Doesn't annoy me. Listening to metal has always dropped me into stereotypes. "Oh, Satan worshipper", "Oh, you just like screamo", "Are you emo?", and my personal favourite "Wow, you must be depressed like... 24/7". I giggle at most of them. Stereotypes are there for a reason.

I understand what your saying, but I feel as rough with this stereotype I feel as though it's so engrained in peoples mind that gay people have started to feel pressure to become it. So many gay people I've met have behave like the stereotype. It's almost as though it's becoming real.

It maybe because that's who they are as people, or they have hung around with that kind of people their entire life, they don't know any different. Never hung around with overly flamboyant people myself as it made me rather uncomfortable, to the point that I didn't feel like I fit in.

Most of the gay people I have met aren't flamboyant at all, in fact a lot of them dislike the pride parades and the whole stereotype too, so you're not alone. Then again, it maybe a stereotype of where I am from, but there aren't many flamboyant people in general here anyway. I noticed a lot more "loud" people when I was in Bristol a week or so back, so I can only assume it's because you're living in the south.

I always thought it seemed forced or as though they were trying too hard. But maybe that's what flamboyance is. Generally I'll try to get away from flamboyant people, I really feel out of place and uncomfortable.

They possibly could be forcing it, or because of how obnoxious, at least I find it to be, flamboyancy is, it feels more forced as a result. Though, because I am not flamboyant, means I can stay quiet about my sexuality. :P

I was never "camp" myself while closeted or when I came out - the only giveaway for me was that I had no girlfriend history :) But among other gay friends of mine we act all camp etc because why not, it's fun tbh and while I cant do that 24/7, its fun to just not give a fuck and be all cute n shit ;)

As a person who is not out with anyone I know I absolutely hate the pride parade and all that flamboyant crap. As far as i'm concerned we aren't any different from people who only like those from the opposite gender and there is no reason we should.

I don't even act camp when talking to my gay friends. It just feels completely wrong to me, more so because it's not who I am. I prefer being a sarcastic tosspot who throws out insults at friends(jokingly, obviously) than anything else.

After all, sarcastic insults is the English way.

Eh, each to their own. :D

Side note: Also I'm talking about the kind of people like Alan Carr, the chatty man. Fucking hell. Loads of people I know love him, but if he's even on T.V., I can't stand to even listen to him, I have to leave the room. To make it worse some of them seriously think I'm homophobic because of it now. :D

Alan Carr is alright, but his humour is utter shite.

Now Stephen Fry. That man may not be the best looker, but his humour makes up for it all.

I would date Fry in a heartbeat -- I mean; think of the post-sex conversation!

While I don't do Camp, I do believe I understand it to a good extent.  It's not about the flair of it, and its not a necessity for being gay.  It's a cultural theatricality from our forefathers, from which adjoining to it creates a trace, a bond to those who were before, and for which liberation of the spirit comes.

There was once a time, in the very recent past, of the police raids on the bars; the arrests, the standing in the street and yelling at the top of your voice to the impassioned faces of the officers or crowd standing across from you.  Camp was a face-forward shout against The Calamity - the disease sweeping through and killing off our friends, one by one; it was a steadfast declaration to AIDs and to the public that "you do not own me."

Today Camp is touching what came before; it’s a celebration and a remembrance.  I'm not Camp; but often I wish I could be.
