look, the dslrs aren't really better than phone cameras at this juncture for photos, and sometimes they're actually worse. the big reason to buy cameras is for film/video

 

i know it may not be common knowledge, but your best photos will have been at the benevolence of good lighting. you can get full manual camera controls on some androids these days too, but it's all about the environment. a camera can only compensate for that so much, before you have night vision goggle and everything looks like a grainy green combat scene

the cameras in our smartphones have come leaps and bounds, seriously. save yourself the money

I'll have to entirely disagree.  For cameras in general people are far too caught up in sensors and pixels and everything else.  But aside from composition and lighting, LENSES are key.  A phone is by nature a slim little slab and no amount of technology will make up for the insufficient space to put in a quality lens.  My f/1.8 50mm prime while only costing me $70 CAD used, even on my five year old DSLRs, can capture images your fanciest iphone can't because of the very narrow depth of field it can capture.  It's beautiful for close up portraits.  That's not even one of the expensive ones though it's much more about physical space afforded than it is 

 

Because, you know, in film school we learned a lot about lenses and if anyone went to 'film school' and left not knowing about the importance of lenses... Er, they maybe paid too  much for that education.

Yes but DSLRs have the widest range of lenses produced and use very common mounts.  A lot of the smaller cameras with interchangeable lenses only have what limited series were produced for that camera model or maybe it's small family of products.  On the other hand you can get EF and F mount lenses from first and third parties, plenty of models have been produced for 20 years because there's no need to change them and these lenses are so popular, EF and F mounting plates are available for products like the RED series of cameras.  Canon even has $20 000 cinematic primes on their EF mount which you could mount to anything from an EF capable Red Dragon to an 550 Ti

The downside is I can only update it with stuff I worked on and finished.  Stuff I'm WORKING on I really can't post online for NDA's and leak concerns ect.  But FYI, I'm working on two different TV series as a VFX compositor right now.

Correction, flagships have the good cameras. My phone, not so much. I don't tend to buy flagship phones.
