I am not updating this guide. A lot of the info is irrelevant at this point and there is way too much broken stuff for me to even bother.

 

EDIT: as is, this entire guide is broken. This happened because of the IPBv4 update and I will soon revamp this (If I feel like this all is even relevant anymore).

For example, pretty much all BBCode in this thread is broken  

This thread is not meant for your questions about tech, it about learning the basics of the LTT Forum and asking question about that. Just wanted to make that clear

 

 

We have all been new on this site once. Including me.

I have found that this forum (and it's community) are very open and welcoming, which is great!

What I have also seen is that there is a lack of something like a beginners guide.

With the recent big giveaway we have gotten quite a few new forum members, so I thought this would be a good time to make this thread.

 

There's a CoC (Code of Conduct) which is pretty good and tells you some rules and there's a new build 'rules' thread which tells you what to say when you are wanting advice on a new build.

There's also a F.A.Q., but I feel like these 3 things combined still miss a few things.

Other than that there's not really some general tips and advice on using this forum.

That's why I am making this thread.

So without further postponing, here are some tips you should know as a new member.

If you have an awesome deal that you would like to share with others, we have a dedicated sub-forum for that. We do have requirements of that which can be found here.

 

The rules are as follows:

1. In the title, please include the geological location of the deal and the source.
2.  
3. Don't make the titles super long. Just indicate the product type, the location, and the digital source. Including the price in the front of the title is helpful, but not required as of this time.
4.  
5. Please include the currency that's being used.
6.  
7. You may not post to any secondhand websites, including but not limited to, eBay. If you have a question about a website, message a mod about it.
8.  
9. If you have a G2A link that you would like to use, they're fine as of this time.
10.  
11. You may NOT use any referral links unless they are helping to support LinusTechTips or LMG.

Here on LTT, we like news. 

We especially like Tech news (which includes gaming news).

We like it so much, we dedicated an entire sub forum to it.

Feel free to post interesting news to it, but do it with care.

But to sum it up:

• Be sure it's interesting for the LTT community.
•  
• Be sure it's not a repost (it has not been posted yet)
•  
• Include some quotes from the article
•  
• Include your source(s)
•  
• Include your personal opinion or guesses as to what will happen.

Please do not make threads about a picture you found online or anything else small. We do have a Status update feature that you can find on the top of the page after pressing your name, which is fit for these type of small updates or any other 'shitposts'

 

If you have a question, you can make a thread and ask people for some advice.

It's a great way of getting some answers, but you have to be sure to:

• Follow your thread.
•  
• Quote people when answering them.
•  
• Give detail on the problem and what you have done to resolve it
•  
• Give details on your build.
•  

These are some crucial things when making a thread and responding to other.

Try to keep it small and simple, but give enough details. People are too often shied away by a post that is too big.

Keep it to the point and detailed enough.

 

Be sure to post it in the right sub forum too. If it does not belong in any; post in in General Discussion and if it is not tech related; post it in Off-topic.

If it belongs (or could fit in) multiple subs, post it in the most appropriate one.

People here seem to know everything about a lot of tech related stuff, so asking for advice on this forum is very viable.

Once again, be sure to follow your thread an quote people when answering them.

If you want advice on what to upgrade be sure to tell:

• What you have now (your PC components).
•  
• What you are looking to spend (And say what currency you use too).
•  
• What you are looking to achieve.
•  
• Your location.
•  

With these things in mind, people can give you some great advice.

As said earlier, asking for advice here is very viable, so people have to give advice too obviously.

When giving advice, keep the stuff in mind that the other person asked for and explain your choices.

 

When you say GPU A is a better choice than GPU B, tell them why.

Link to a (or multiple) benchmarks, showing that GPU A is actually better than GPU B.

This way OP, and everyone else in the thread, knows why you gave that advice.

 

Also, when you don't agree with someone, politely tell them you don't agree and show them what would be a better choice.

If you copy and paste something to your post, be sure to select it and press the button with the gray square around it. This makes it so the background and font color are automatic (there are many people who use Night Theme who would appreciate it )

 

How do I add pictures to my post?

That is really easy to do. Just upload them to a different host (like imgur) and grab the direct link to the picture (see the right of the page).

You embed it by pressing the button with the red square around it and you paste the direct link. 

 

How do you get those spoilers??

You press the button with the blue square around it. From the dropdown menu, choose 'spoiler'. You can add a title, but it is not required.

This will just place something like this on the page:

Here you can add whatever you want to it. Often it is very much appreciated if you add your big pictures or YouTube videos to these spoilers, because otherwise the page might get sluggish for some people.

 

How can I add code to my thread?

With the button with the orange square. You can select what language you want with the dropdown menu and insert code (that looks like the spoiler tutorial above)

Sometimes a post gets deleted or a post gets locked if it is against the CoC. Sometimes you get a private message why, but sometimes you don't. When you are wondering "why?", dont ask in public on the forum, but rather PM a mod (preferably the mod in question, if you know who locked the topic or whatever) and politely ask.

Don't make a new thread asking why a topic got locked, don't ask in a thread why it happened, but rather take it to PM.

 

This applies to all moderator question usually. 9 out of 10 times you are better off asking these question in PM, rather than trying to get more attention to it.

Be sure to be nice and follow the rules you have read in the CoC.

Try to stay nice to others and when they start attacking you, don't attack/argue back but rather tell them you don't want to argue and Report his post.

 

If you have a problem with the moderators, please PM them instead of making a thread about it.

@Sauron suggested that people should use the status update feature, instead of making a thread for something small.

@gorillacowman suggested me to add a small tutorial on how to add pictures to posts and motivated me to add some other small things

@terrytek suggested a section on how to react to your (or someone else's) topic getting locked.

Oh, you did! Sorry I wasn't clear, it is organized! :blush:  I meant that everything is sort of aligned to the far left (towards the user info bits) but should flow more evenly towards the center. The organization of the spoilers and whatnot is actually great the way it is.

 

So what I mean is something more like this;

It's simple... Bold for title, underlined for notice, italic for notice text. Or something like that. I'm sure you could use some tricks as seen on the forum..
