Radioshack selling customer data at auction

Nexxus

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/03/despite-privacy-policy-radioshack-customer-data-up-for-sale-in-auction/

RadioShack is trying to auction off its customer data on some 117 million customers as part of its court-supervised bankruptcy.

includes "consumer names, phone numbers, mailing addresses, e-mail addresses, and, where allowed, activity data."

The states claim that RadioShack told its online customers (PDF) that "We will not sell or rent your personally identifiable information to anyone at any time." Signs at RadioShack's brick-and-mortar stores had similar language, according to the suit. "The information you give us is treated with discretion and respect. We pride ourselves on not selling our private mailing list. From time to time, we may send you information from our company or from select, responsible companies that may join with RadioShack to bring you special offers," said a sign at a Florida store, according to anexhibit (PDF).

RadioShack, meanwhile, claims the number of affected consumers is being exaggerated by Texas and Tennessee.

I dunno what to even say on this, that is beyond fucked that frankly disgusting that they would even CONSIDER such a thing im glad the only thing I have ever bought from radioshack was an extremely overpriced Mini USB cable since my ps3 came with a 2ft long one (thanks Sony) and didnt have to give out any info.

Hopefully no one here is going to be effected by this BS if it ever actually happens. Shame on Radioshacks owners.

With that sort of information out there in so many places I'm surprised you can actually still sell it.

Wait, a court told them to do it, or at least gave them the green light to do it? What fucking idiot of a judge would let them do this?

I'm not surprised but I seriously laughed my ass off. Auctioning off client's personal data. Oh man, what a comedy this would make.

This why I am glad we have a do not call register in Australia.   Unless they want to send me letter in the mail that info is useless.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Looks like the lawyers in hell won't be as lonely as I expected.

Ghostery does the same.

Use Disconnect instead.

Are you sure?

Does disconnect go though a proxy? It seems like it.

I really don't know, how "this accusations are exxegerated" could make this situation any less .... awefull, but I digress ...
companys selling user information is sadly nothing new and I think, that the longer nothing is done to cut this off, more and more companys will do this ....
