Try to set 400W as default, rather than setting it as max value and having to use Afterburner to increase the power limit. When I modded my BIOS I think I had issues with the power limit as well, I'm not sure, but I think I fixed it by setting the max power limit I wanted as default value. Keep in mind that max power limit has to be higher than default, otherwise you'll get a BSOD, so set it to 410W or something.

Did that all those things, it still wouldn't go above the 260 watts.

I also did some hardmodding in the hope it would have some effect. I shorted out 2 of the 3 shunts on the PCB in the hope that it would do something, still no change. However, I also changed the power cirquit of the fans to still use the PWM signal of the GPU but the 12v power directly from the PSU. Now the GPU runs at a max of 260 watts all the time, no matter the fan speed.

EDIT: this is the bios I'm currently using http://www.mediafire.com/download/cje0l7hgg2gy8g6/gtx9703.rom

Looking at either the 970 Strix or the MSI 390... What are your feels on either of those two? It seems like everyone is going towards the 390 for the extra vram / more "future proofed"...

I do notice the disadvantage of only 3.5GB of fast VRAM in GTA V with maxed 1080p settings so I'd say, if the 390 is as expensive as or cheaper I'd go for that one.

The 390 is on a level if not slightly cheaper than the 970, if you OC the 970 it beats a 390. Although if you OC the 390 it slightly beats the OC 970.

What kind of FPS are you seeing on GTA 5 @ ultra settings?

Running a 970 @1567/3557MHz, a 3770k @4.8FHz and 16GB ram @1886MHz on ultra 1080p (all maxed but no frame scaling) I get ~48 fps but quickly go over the 3.5gb and my fps drops below 30, with slight tweaking I get almost maxed settings and 60fps average with the 3.5gb never filling up.

I got a bad card sadly but how do you even...

Hahaha, I bought it from someone, been meaning to re-flash it as I get PWR perfcaps in firestrike. It's watercooled and hat 87% ASIC.

Mij is 69,4% and my voltage is locked at 1.212v eventhough it's been through a bios flash for 1.3v

I wondering if the 8gb of vram will really make a difference cause i believe the all the clock speeds on the 390 are lower than the 970......fuck why couldnt they just of made a 970 with 8gb of vram

There is no point in having 8Gb for 970, I can say the same about 390. 290(x) also had 8Gb variants, but those didn't give much edge ( if any ), some might say that crossfire can use it, but it's more ment for someone that wants multiple 4k monitors.

Did some more tinkering with my OC, I noticed that by lowering my core clock by ~10MHz I could gain ~350MHz on the memory OC. My GTX 970 (with the 69,4% ASIC quality and voltage being maxed at 1.212v) now runs at 1552MHz core and 3920MHz memory.

When doing a fire strike test with this and my 3770k at 4,9GHz I'm sadly just shy of the 11k with fire strike at 10956.

I usually run my RAM at 1600MHz (that's the original speed), tried OC'd it to 2133MHz however it sticks to 1866 but now it doesn't wanna OC my gpu memory anymore. I got 10486 on gpu @1552/3505 and cpu @4.9/1866.

Somehow I rekt something because now I can't even change my gpu memory clock when back at 1600MHz on my ram. Gonna do some digging.

EDIT: reinstalled drivers, disabled msi afterburner, forced an OC with another programm and got everything to work again at 1600MHz.

Experiment with timings, ring bus can also yield little bump in CPU score.

I'm not yet at that level of overclocking yet, I have no idea how to xD

Maybe in a few months I'll look more into it but I have no idea, just disabled stepping and powersaving, bumped up some of the voltages and increased my clock speed.

When overclocking ram, you want to relax the timings CAS ratings (increase them) then increase the ram speed, once you're at a point you like, 1866 is good, then start reducing the latency in single increments.
