Another 19 Year Old in Jail for making a sarcastic comment in Runescape

Josh was playing RuneScape when another player started to antagonise him, eventually telling him to kill himself.

Josh sarcastically replied that he was going to kill himself, and blow up the local high school too.

He has been in Jail for the last 9 months for his "Terrorist Threat". The authorities stated that they have been "extra cautious" since the sandy hook shootings.

A judge was so concerned about the risk Josh Carter posed to the public that he set bail at $500,000.

Wow government seems a bit paranoid. Jails will be filling up with angry gamers pretty quickly if they keep continuing like this

Still, it goes without saying that these are far from reasonable punishments. I feel that the US govt is heading to a path where if you disrespect the govt in anyway (like stalin's time), they can arrest you.

He is facing 8 years. I can tell you what he will more then likely get. He will at max get 11 months 29 days in jail if that. They might even let him go at 7 months.

 

In the eyes of the court, they do this thing called max sentencing, which in this case is 8 years if he takes it to trial, but he wont because his lawyer will tell him that is a bad idea and the DA will get him to plea out to a lesser charge just so they can get a conviction. If you are a first time offender and it is not major ( as the Texas kids case is not major in the eyes of the court ) they will not throw the book at you. They just want him to be part of the system, gives the state more money and more state  pay raises for housing another inmate.

Wow that's pretty messed up if you ask me. Sucks for the kid. Hopefully his record can be expunged.

As terrible as it is that the law is treating these teens in this way, I think people need to understand that neither individual has actually faced sentencing yet and that a lot of what the media is pushing out is mostly shock value at the moment. It is ridiculous that they had to be in jail for so long before the trial even started, there's no excuse for that. What's worse is that there are people who are messed up in the head so much to try to provoke others to respond like that.

 

I think I already mentioned it, but the courts/law are only using these individuals to set "examples" to fear the power the law holds now. It's sad to see how far a nation can sink over 10-ish years.

If convected, he can get the charge/charges expunge  5-7 years after he is released ( some sates are 5 years and some are 7 years )

Jailing someone for being sarcastic will make them angry and will probably make them actually do said thing once they are out. Terrible idea to put them behind bars, and whatever happened to freedom of speech?

What did you say there , i grew up playing runescape it's one of the best games ever made if you get into it , only thing that's missing are the graphics ( which should be fixed in RuneScape 3 ..)

The problem is that this is such a serious issue with such a big grey area that the justice system can't afford to draw a line between what is sarcasm and what could be signs of mental instability.

This just boggles my mind. Lets lock up all the stand up comics that joke about terorism, because they say silly stuff. Just move to sweden guys, it is nice over here, and the "outrageous government atrocities" is orders of magnitudes less appalling :)

As far as I'm concerned, it's these idiots own fault. I have zero sympathy for these overly passive aggressive teenagers. On the other case involving Lol I've seen comments about the thought police. It's not the thought police when you're expressing it on an easily traceable communication.

These things are probably found buy keywords through the database and then traced based apon your account information.
