So my friends and I are going to have a little LAN at his house and I have no clue how to set up a server (opening it to LAN is to logical and easy) (plus we are going have other friends who cant make it play)

How would I set up his dads workstation to run a server?

(the WS is 5960x 32gb ddr4 and a titan z)

just download the server, put in the IP and port in the config file, and run it

uhhh.. of course it will run the server..

And it's very easy to set up your server. Just download the stuff from minecraft.net and configure some stuff (I'm sure there are some good tutorials online too for that)

Can you explain in more detail. I just know how to build computers but I suck when it comes to using it.

look at youtube tutorials, its easier to see how its done than to read it in words ;)

Download the server and start it
Open CMD and write in ipconfig
Your LAN ip should be at IPV4

Okay thanks. Now does anyone know of any good server plug ins?

I would actually reccomend mcmyadmin. Their under 10mplayer version is free. Its all GUI controlled, and very easy to use. Give it a try :)

When I used to run a Minecraft server, I found craftbukkit to be an absolutely fantastic build with a good API and a strong community.

To be honest though, if you cant google "how to set up a minecraft server" you probably are going to struggle setting up configs for plugins, etc....

I personally wouldn't let my kid's friend messing with my computer if it was that expensive... you have permission for this right...?

Don't put the IP in the config file like said above. Not sure what it is for, but Mojang themselves say to leave it blank, I believe it is for running multiple servers on one computer. Leave the port as the default 25565 for simplicity.

Honestly all you do is go to minecraft.net/download, download the server file and run it. Anyone on the LAN will connect via the local IP of the computer that is running the server. Keep in mind the server computer has to have Java installed on it.

If you need people outside the LAN to connect, you need to go into the router and port forward port 25565 to the IP address of the computer running the server. Give the WAN address to your friends who are not going to be there with you, you can find the WAN address by googling "what is my ip". The port forwarding is so when the people outside of the LAN type in your friends WAN address it will go to your router first, and the port forward you setup will tell it that the server is on whatever computer you typed the IP.

You can test if the port forward is setup correctly by going to www.canyouseeme.org and trying port 25565

You may also need to add an exception in the firewall for the computer running the server, try it first to see if it works before messing with that though. If it doesn't, google it, there are literally thousands of how-tos.

Also, read this: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Setting_up_a_server

I wouldn't mess with plugins if you are only playing for one night, its more stuff you are putting on someone else's computer, and its not like you will run out of things to do in 6 hours in vanilla minecraft.
