Skylake 'Core M' Shipping 2H' 2015

Opcode

Source

Like Broadwell, the first chips coming out of this next generation will be the "Core M" products for tablets and other low-power devices. Skylake Core M chips shipping for H2'2015 was confirmed this week by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich at a Goldman Sachs Technology event.

Not until months later (likely around the start of 2016) will we likely see the more powerful Skylake processors. Skylake is the 14nm "tock" step to Broadwell and will feature a graphics processor with Direct3D 12.0 capabilities, Thunderbolt 3.0, SATA Express, AVX 3.2 support, MPX Memory Protection Extensions, and various other improvements.

Maybe we'll get Broadwell desktop chips and Skylake desktop chips at the same time.

I wouldn't mind that. DDR4 with skylake, DDR3 with broadwell to keep the transition smooth

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

Broadwell HQ/MQ aren't even out yet and U JUST launched. Hold your damn horses. Q2 desktop broadwell unlocked, Q3 desktop Skylake locked. For those of you about to go grab that VRZone article, it only speculated about unlocked skylake.

Skylake chips already have both memory controllers. It'll be a mobo maker decision which to use on what boards.

Intel has a UNI-DIMM standard which I think is an adapter to hold DDR3 and put it into a DDR4 slot, but I haven't seen any release news on it.

Pointless to "upgrade" to Broadwell at this point (not much of an upgrade) as Skylake desktop skews should reach volume production by the end of the year.

Good for offices and schools that need lower power SKUs. Skylake goes back up to 95W whereas Broadwell is expected to top out at 65W.

There will be Skylake skews at the 65w TDP mark that will probably be much stronger than Broadwell (especially with GT4e).

I'm not going to disagree. Whatever it takes for that WAN Show callout though...

On topic, I'm excited to see what Skylake can bring forward in the iGPU realm. A push towards gutting the need for "low end" GPUs entirely, perhaps?

I could care less about a WAN Show shout-out or these low-power chips. The news was at my disposal so I shared it (being nobody else here has).

I guess you could say Kaveri already broke that realm as the A10-7850k out performs most of their own low end discrete cards even with the same amount of shaders. Now all that's needed is for them to push forward raising the bar. I think we are going to see a switch up in the industry where Intel is focused on raising iGPU performance meanwhile AMD focuses on raising CPU performance.

Nah, Intel will use market segmentation to its fullest. GT3/e, same generation of GPU as Broadwell too, though maybe slightly higher clock rates.

And the Skylake 65W chips will have lesser clock rates to the Broadwell ones without a doubt. 4.4GHz 5770k vs. ~3.6GHz 6710/6720, even with its IPC boost, Skylake would lose in the performance front, though it would be cheaper.
