I bought a 970 1 day before the VRAM thing came up

UltraNeonGaming

I am not that happy, all my other PC parts have been ordered now, expect the RAM, SHIPPING IS TAKING FOREVER. (Also it's NOT a red and black build so calm down guys).

So anyway I got a Asus strix 970 in store 1 FREAKING DAY before this whole VRAM thing blew up on the interwebs, my 970 is sitting next to me right now, funny, I also saw a G1 960 there before the NDA had ended and before it was announced: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/295812-gtx-960-on-sale-at-a-pc-store/

So, I just don't know what to do know... I know I won't use more than 3.5GB of fast memory and go on to the slower 512mb part but I am angry that some of the other specs are also not what we thought they were.

I don't really care about the performance and everything of the card I just want to know what nvidia will do, if they don't do anything then so be it.

What do you think the final outcome of all this will be?

this something to do with the core its self, the way that they were able to use a smaller mem bus put more stress onto the core its self, and the 970 can handle that extra stress

the only thing i could see nvidia doing is changing the reference memory amount to 3gb

Don't worry about it. Most games don't use more than 3GB on 1080p. And It's still an awesome card.

you wont notice a thing unless playing at 4k, and if nobody had of told you about the issue youd be more than happy with the gpu and sing its praises till the cows come home. dont let it get to you :)

I purchased two of them as the issue was being discovered for 4K gaming. Everytime I get to 3.2GB - 3.5GB+ VRAM usage my games either crash or become unplayable. Selling/returning them getting something else.

Thanks for the replies guys! I know that I won't be using over 3.5GB since I am playing on 1080p, the reason why I am angry is that nvidia said this GPU had different specs than it does now, not just vram, I am talking about the ROPs and the cashe, I read online what nvidia had to say about this, I understand why they did this and why the result of this is what it is, I am just upset that I had been somewhat lied to.

Every game (other than source games) use more than 3GB of RAM at 4K for me.

It's actually 3.5 GB, with the way Nvidia designed the memory.  Once you go over though, and get into the last .5GB, performance restores back to normal.  You have a point though, he shouldn't go over 3GB unless he's running in 4k or surround monitors, or is running BF4 on Ultra with AA enabled.

With settings on high w/o AA I still manage to surpass 3GB VRAM usage at 4K after ~3 mins of gameplay.

I don't want to return them because I am an nvidia fan boy (Doesn't mean that I don't like or reccomend AMD, I would just pick nvidia over AMD)

I want to know what nvidia will do as a result of this

Nvidia doesn't see it as in issue, but I've done many tests and it's a legitimate issue at 4K. 1080p/1440p is good tho

On a more serious note:

At 1080p and 1440 p it wont be a problem , dont worry.

Only at 4k.

I actually like that GIF lmao.

@OP - Your card is OK for 1080p/1440p regardless of the controversy over this card. It's still as sexcellent as it was before. It might not do as well as the 290X at 4K but there are cases the 970 wins.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Nvidia simply showed there was no FPS drop and said it is not an issue, basically they're saying you should have gotten the 980....

How are they working on a fix when the memory is divided in a different way?

And their results are irrelevant because they didn't account minimum fps to show frame stutter.

They didn't fool me.

so the rumers of a recall means that nvidia is just saying  F*** it right

Just because they haven released a proper statement about the issue doesn't mean that they are not working on the issue.

Yea, in addition there are MASSIVE frame drops also and the game crashes. I've done many tests on both cards and in SLI. Really mad at Nvidia for the first time in YEARS

I assume you bought this card based on the performance charts you saw, like any sane human being. If you did, you don't have much to complain, the performance is exactly the same regardless of what we now know is actually inside the chip. As you said, at lower resolutions you won't notice the slower ram. What really would have sucked would have been buying them for 4k and THEN finding out you get stuttering regardless of framerate.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
