Is the GTX 970 worth it

Carnoustie14

I have a super limited budget and I am wondering if the GTX 970 is REALY worth the money, is it overkill for 1080p? I want a solid 60fps in most titles (bf4, Far cry 4, mine craft (jokes))

Is it REALY worth the extra $150 over the upcoming 960

We don't know how the 960 will be.

The 970 is an excellent GPU, which will be able to any game at 1080p at the moment.

We don't know how it will be later on, but I think the 970 will last for a while.

If you really don't want to spend that much on a GPU, take a look into the 280x or maybe 290(x)

for 1080p 60? no honestly its not worth it, though a 970 will last longer and perform better

for 1080p 144hz or for 1440p, 970 100% is worth the money

Minesweeper requires atleast sli 980's to run at a steady 60fps at 1080p.

It's totally worth it. Even if you don't plan to upgrade to a 1440p or a >60Hz monitor, you can still render games at 1440p. Very helpful for games that offer little to no AA.

No sense in asking if you can't afford it. But if you CAN buy it, it's totally worth it. Even on low end CPUs, the 970 is a beast.

You have the money for the GTX970 and you you need it now? -> Buy it, it is the best price/performance/power efficiency/overclockability card on the market right now. Will the GTX960 top it? I dunno, depends on how much money they will ask for it. If you wanna make sure you buy the best of these two wait for the GTX960 to come out and decide then, since until then there is no way of telling how it will perform and how much it will cost. You need a card now and you dont have the money for the GTX970? Go for a r9270x or r9280. The debate should not be about if it is an overkill for 60fps 1080p, it it is an overkill now 1-2 years later it will be just perfect, while a card that barely does it now, won't be able to do it then at all.

That said, if budget is a key issue, NVIDEA are stating that the 960 is twice as efficent powerwise compared to the 970.

When did they state that?

Personally I'd go for the 970 over the 960.

That said, if budget is a key issue, NVIDEA are stating that the 960 is twice as efficent powerwise compared to the 970. You also have a better overclock option with their GM 204 GPU core in the 960, which can be easily boosted to 1500Mhz.

Who the hell is NVIDEA ? Sounds like a paper tissue company...

But if you mean nVidia they didn't launch the GTX960 officially and only leaked specs. If one believes the rumors and charts is't going to be half of a GTX980 spec and performance wise. On http://videocardz.com/ it is stated that the GTX960 is the perfect card for playing MOBA in 1080p.

I'd personally go with a GTX970 because those cut down chips and graphics cards that try to be a jack of all trades could never be a satisfying experience in more demanding games. And you stated already games like FC4.

Neither makes sense. Buy an R9 290 for near GTX 970 performance at near GTX 960 prices. The GTX 960 looks like a turd anyways.

Not everyone has access to 290s for cheap. In fact, they cost EVEN MORE than 970s where I live.

Also, 290 TDP is so much higher, it might impact your power bill, depending on where you live, and what you do.

Also, 290 generates more heat, which is bad if you don't have proper airflow. *Cue living in a 35ºC ambient as I do.

Also, SLI 970 requires a weaker PSU than CF 290, if you think you could do it.

Also, the game you like may be optmized more towards the nvidea side than AMD's.

Not to mention the exclusive features each card has. One might prefer Nvidea's.
