Talk me out of buying a Macbook

hellyt6

When I get my tax return and the rest of my FAFSA after my books, I plan on finding a 2009-2013 Macbook on ebay. I know, they're not worth it, but I'd really like to get a good feel for Mac OS X, since I plan on going into the IT field having a feel for every operating system will help, right? I would do a Hackintosh, but the only Mac I have around is an old iMac G3 in snow white... It doesn't even know the definition of OS X last I checked, I think it's running 9.8 still. So tell me.. Is there another way to go about it?

Current Build: Intel i5-3570k @3.8GHz; MSI-Z77-G41; 8GB Corsair Ballistix @1600MHz; EVGA SSC GTX 650TI 2GB; Adata SX900 128GB; Western Digital Green 1TB; Asus CD burner; Corsair HX750 750 Watt power supply; Cooler Master HAF-912.

only PCMASTERACE-Trolls would say that ;)

Only people with brains would say that (<- that.. That was a joke...)

Nah, but I really don't like Mac so I would agree.. Only if you code for iOS it might be worth it..

But just build a hackingtosh if you need that

Do those have HDMI out? I should really actually dig into this a little bit more lol.

I only think they're not worth it because I watched my $350 Dell Inspiron go head to head with a 2013 Macbook Pro 13-inch and nearly beat it in every test (same exact hard drives, 4GBs of RAM at 1600MHz, only difference was the Macbook had an i5-whatevertheyputinthem and the OS, my Dell has an i3-3227U) long story short, I shouldn't have been able to load WoW faster and pull better fps.

Apple makes good laptops, nothing wrong with them. It is the certain PCMR trolls who make it a big thing.

only when there new, second hand and older model macs keep they price because of branding,  so the amount of laptop your getting for your money is poor

I do actually have an old Macbook but, well, it's old. 2006 model, won't go to anything past 10.7.5, and I had to fiddle with the firmware to get it to load that. So far, my main issue with doing the hackintosh is that the two i5 systems in my house right now are running MSI motherboards, and the audio drivers that are available won't work with the sound card (at least through my testing) and causes kernel panicks and everything else. (Generic Realtek, y u complicated).

Yes it does. :) That's why I want one so bad since my TV has two HDMI inputs.

If you're going into IT linux will help you a lot more than osx ever would. osx locks you out of its guts completely, all you can access is the user interface that completely hides what's under it. Linux on the other hand will show you anything you ask it to, and let you do anything you want with it. Secondly, as you said macbooks are not worth it at all, you could buy a windows machine and install osx on it (hackintosh) if you really must have it. You say you have a dell inspiron already, use that! Install osx, linux, windows and whatever you feel like installing in multi boot and profit!

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

It's not so much wanting one, it's the whole.. My knowledge of OS X is only skin deep. I know how the UI works from my time working in a call center that used only Macs, and I wasn't allowed to fiddle with them. All I could do is load up Safari and our logging software lol.

Depends on the price. I would buy one for a good price.

Oh yeah, didn't Yosemite take out a lot of the accessibility to what's under the hood?

if its as simple as wanting to learn the interface then dont go balls deep in the price of whatever you are buying, from what i understand you just want to learn, if thats the case then cap your budget at something like £300-£400, you arent gonna get anything spectacular  but you dont need a laptop that will blow your face off anyways.

That's a lot of the reason as to why I was looking at 2009 models and the like. I borrowed a 2009 model from a friend for a short time for a paper and it was fantastic for what it was. She even managed WoW, Final Fantasy Online and the like on it with minimal issues. I think she burned her leg on the bottom of it once lol. So buying new isn't exactly a choice here unless I can find something refurbished? Or maybe a rich kid is getting rid of it for cheap? I dunno.

there's nothing wrong with macs except there a little pricey and there hard to work on. If you dont mind buying special adapters and are never going to upgrade its a good choice if you like the looks.
