Hoffmans iron law.... Loud, deep bass, small enclosure: pick 2.

It's not overpriced for what it is, it is overpriced for what it does.

It's extremely impressive what they can get out of that small size, but the size limits (bass)output.

If you can, you should carry around a 12v battery, Lepai amp and a pair of bookshelve speakers.

Wait what? What kind of stupid comparison is that? Indeed, you got to keep size in mind.

I've heard an Ultimate Ears Mini Boom and they are pretty loud. The bass response isn't bad at all and you can connect to it by Bluetooth or with a 3.5mm stereo jack. The battery lasts and decent amount of time even at higher volumes. In terms of value it's almost certainly better than the Beats Pill (where most of your money will be spent on the little "b" logo).

As @Lutkeveld pointed out, the ideal solution would be to carry around a big battery powered boom box (This is my preference for camps and the like), but where size is an issue the UE Mini Boom would be a great purchase.

I've listened to a pill at a party, and it was audible over conversation and a crackling barbecue.

Whether it's worth the price or not in audio quality, I don't know, but as a guest at a party I found it to set the atmosphere really well.
