New alienware laptop lineup- The big boys can now use the GPU dock

Syntaxvgm

Still overpriced and shitty.

Actually as far as laptops go Alienware are built like tanks. They're amazing.

I really don't like the current cock lock and dock implementation for an eGPU.

Can't use the laptop keyboard when its a foot off desk so you need anotherr keyboard in front of the system. In which case you'll be pushing the system back just so you can adopt an hunching posture to get closer to the screen.

Why isn't this just using a cable?

:eidt:

Ooops. Forgot this thread wasn't about the MSI implementation.

Well at least we know that MSword 2013 is a great idea for alienware laptops. Oh and lets not forget the 4 years extended manufacturers warranty.

But seriously its nice to see more laptops with the dock option. The overpriced investment into a gaming laptop doesn't seem so bad now...

Until you see the GPU prices B)

I shop for my dual gpu laptop with a good ol sandy bridge i7 that overclocks like a beast

"Should be good for at least one upgrade with that CPU"

Look for a gpu slightly better than a potato

Realize I'd have to sell my kidney to sex or something.

Cry

Bought a GTX 970 for my desktop.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

razer has no 17 inch panel above 1080p.

No one does.

They don't exist for some reason.

Allow me to rephrase that, it doesn't exist YET =D

I believe AW have something hiding behind their sleeves & not to mention the new GT80 Titan from MSI with Cherry MX switches is... Well, not normal if you ask me. It's nice to have a movable keyboard in that form factor compared to the one GLUED. Speaking of that, by allowing it to detach with 0 latency seems like a really excellent idea, then again. It would defeat it's purpose for a gaming laptop. Hmmmm...  ;)

I am not in england either. Mobile version sucks. I am from Lithuania I get completely goverment funded to study.

Everyone comes from different background & have you ever own a mobile gaming rig that you could use to work as a day to day driver?

Again, No products in ANY industry are made for everyone & there will be no 100% agreement of someone who pinpoint & chooses 1 brand and that very brand alone.

It's great to hear that your country is funding your studies & taking care of you, here in ASIA we need to fork out our own $$$ for everything while I believe most country do.

I can't stop emphasizing this, is your money, buy what you want, anything you want. If you need don't need a mobile form rig, seriously. Desktop is the best choice, if you're a multimedia / designer / artist that renders a lot of graphical data, you really need a powerful mobile machine to keep you going & get your work done.

It's okay for me as I needed the performance juice I could get, many times faggot GT540 from my sony VPCF217HG ruins my wedding work & worst of all... Non upgradable graphics. Drives me nuts wedding dinner is able to start while it's still rendering for the slideshow.. Ain't pretty.

anyways on topic Alienwares are really nice, I am not big on their asthetics, but for the price you do get your monies worth a freind  got a alienware desktop for graduation back in 2009 and it was running perfectly fine and slthough he upgraded to a custom deskop last year, (it did have voltage problems though shitty proprietary power supply)

To be honest, desktop is best custom built & as for Laptops, the only ones that I truly trust is Alienware, Asus ROG, MSI, Gigabyte Aorus. Heat dissipation, upgradibility (futureproof) is the key for gaming laptops

Hello dear linustechtips-community,

I'm also interested in the Alienware, however it is rumored that the AW 15 will not have upgradeable CPU and GPU. This talk came from the AW 15 promotion video where you briefly see the motherboard and no MXM module seems to be on it. This would be very frustrating. Now the first post in this thread still claims there are MXM modules used, and I'm confused on what claim is correct now.

Does anyone know further information?

The Alienware is overpriced idea started when alienware was its own company and truly did have outlandish prices. Since dell took over their prices have become very reasonable and I wouldn't consider any other gaming laptop if I was in the market for one. The warranty and customer service at dell is unmatched with the accidental damage and in home tech support the rest don't offer

You my friend truly savors me from all the typing! An offer no other companies deliver. Guess what's even more interesting? If & when your system do break down within warranted period, you'll get a way better & updated one with no extra cost which I believe most cases Razer, MSI, Sager would ask you to fork out few extra hundreds for an upgraded version from the previous models.

That's the most dumbass fucking comparison I've ever seen. I'm sorry, I cannot let that slide without getting angry.

That's a desktop CPU in that clevo.

The alienware has a low end 2.5GHz option in it. Not unclocked if I remember right- hell I don't even think the unlocked ones are available, at least yet, in the new alienware series.

Meanwhile that clevo is at 3.6GHz.

And for 50$ more you can opt for the 4790k unclocked CPU in that clevo. And believe me there's room to OC like crazy in a laptop if you know what you are doing.

My 2011 sandy alienware can go from 2.5 GHz to 4.3 GHz easily with safe temps and minimal vcore increase. That's of course because it's unlocked.

Of course it costs more.

It's 1861$ for a clevo with a 980m

Actually, I know there's an option that's like 100$ cheaper than that.

Yea. Hell there's a 17 inch that can be shipped with a  980m for 1745$

Add like 150$ for an SSD option.

I'm not saying the alienware is unreasonable, hell I even defend them in some cases, but you sir piss me off. How about doing some research but spreading ignorance?

Hell you can get a clevo with an IPS screen and a 970m with an ssd and hdd like that for 1400$.

Don't act like clevo is overpriced.

Now, I'm not saying you are gonna get wonderful support with the clevo. Because you won't.

That fact you call it a sager shows that you didn't even bother shopping more than one clevo reseller as well.

Some are hunders of dollars more than other sellers for the same laptops. Like eurocom.

They are C-L-E-V-O laptops.

Oh, and news flash- alienware started as a clevo rebrand.

They were "overpriced" (not really overpriced when you count in what work was put into it) because they were made in the states. Now they're made in China like everything else because everyone's trying to save a buck.

As long as it's convenient to me & in case anything happens, they'll replace the part with no questions asked. Perfect solution & support many companies don't offer. So why not an additional $200 that save you tons of trouble & money that would probably cost more than warranted price.
