Parts for family PC

Bluuz

I'm building a pc for a family friend, but I've been out of the pc parts loop for a while. What should I get?

Budget: $1000-1500 CAD
Primary uses: word documents and web browsing

Prefer: small form factor and silence

Also, embarrassing question but, how do I connect to the internet wirelessly on a new desktop? Laptops come with wireless capability but how do I know if my desktop parts have wireless capability? Which parts are responsible for that?

The wireless card helps you connect to the internet. Some motherboards come with it, or you can buy a usb dongle. You should not be spending that much for just browsing and word docs.

A few things:

1 you will need a PCI or USB wifi adapter to use WIFI unless your board supports it natively

2 1000-1500 for a web-browsing build? k....

3 Look into noctua fans for silence, or consider down clocking the CPU and running the fans slower

That's the amount of money they threw at me

If I get this generation's intel i3 or i5 cpu, is the stock cooler sufficient?

Yup even for a bit of overclocking. I figure you won't be doing that on a family PC though.

Keeps their A10-7700K at 1-0C idle 10 at most ive seen.

here is a build that is under your budget. Has wifi built in, way more power than you need, and is very compact. If you want to do some gaming, put a 970mini in it.

Most overkill rig I could build for browsing

Rationale:

i5 for relatively cool performance and good multitasking performance

16gb for brutal tab abuse

PCI SSD for insanely fast boot times

2TB for mass storage

ASUS dvd thing for all your media PC needs

Platinum PSU for maximum efficiency

GTX 750ti for best price/performance

Noctua cooler for near-silent operation

H97 because you probably aren't OCing

Bitphoenix Prodigy because small

Most builds 10 years ago were upwards of 1k for a custom desktop. So they are probably expecting it to be spendy like that.

$500 ish should be enough, as you are seeing.
