What happens when you have pressed your Cherry MX switches 50 million times?

Meawa

Im just wondering what will happen when you've pressed a key 50 million times. If you don't know, 50 million is what Cherry advertises to be how much times you can press their key switches. Does it just stop working or does it get really squeaky or something?

You will probably need to press it 50 million more and then it MIGHT break.

They start to become inconsistent, sometimes keys like blues will have reduced tactile feedback, and stuff like reds might need to be pushed down farther than normal to register.

They dont explode or anything :P

50 million doesnt mean they will break, it just means they will no longer meet the Cherry MX quality standards.

They rate their switches to be perfectly functional to the factory specs for 50 million keystrokes. This is guaranteed after this they just say they MAY degrade

Their self destruct sequence is activated and you have 23 seconds to get it out of the house and into the lead explosion proof box all Cherry MX keyboards come with.

Your keyboard will spontaneously combust at when each key has had EXACTLY 50 million keystrokes.

Germans will come after you for questioning German quality. Just kidding, the switches are rated to being "perfect" for up to 50 million presses, after 50 mil. its anything goes. People have reported keys feeling inconsistent and having more/less resistance when pressing the keys, but its also possible for a failure after 50mil. clicks(this really depends on how you treat the keyboard as well.

They become "not as advertised" after 50 million key presses. By the time you've gotten around to hitting the keys that many times, you'll have become accustomed to the change that has happened to them slowly overtime.

I'm generally curious as to who will actually press a key 50M times on a single keyboard.......

Okay, so i did the maths

lets assume you can press a key constantly 3 times a second, it would take you 13888.89 hours (192.9 days) of constant pressing before you even reach this number......

(50*10^6 / (60^2*72) )

= 192.90123

So.... yeah.....

Take someone who types up documents/etc... all day long at 150~ wpm. Each word is probably an average of 5~ characters. Thats about 900 keystrokes/minute. 900strokes/50 keys = 18strokes/key/minute. Which works out to about 5 years of constantly typing 24/7.

Exactly, who on earth is going to do that all on one keyboard? Its highly un-realistic to expect the key to even come close to that many presses.
