Recommend me a book!

Before i start i'd like to say a massive thank you to my Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 that has served me for 7 years but is finally dying. (Hence the lack of commas in this post as that was the first key to die)

I'm looking to start reading again as I've not been reading much since leaving school and starting further education (mainly just use computers) and i feel my vocabulary and spelling is starting to suffer from only watching films and TV. Even though i have an A* in English Literature my spelling sucks sometimes and my vocab doesn't vary a whole lot...

The genres i enjoy most are mysteries... Or crime; something that has a clever twist/plot to it. So if you can recommended a book that you maybe read recently or in the past that you enjoyed i'd be grateful!  :D

If i have watched the Sherlock series (BBC) do you think i'll still enjoy the books? As i believe they closely relate to the books.

Honestly, I have no idea.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. It's not a mystery per se has interesting mysteries for you to solve* and consists entirely of cleverness and plot twists. Fanfiction, but bears only passing semblance to canon, so there's no need to familiar with the source material.

Also, I play a role in writing In Fire Forged, which isn't a mystery, but is clever and quite good (if I do say so myself). It, too, is a fanfiction, but is written to not require knowledge of the source material.

*"Its mysteries are solvable, and meant to be solved." Also has a subreddit dedicated to trying to figure the mysteries.

These aren't mystery books, per-se, but they all have quite interesting plots and twists. One of my favorites is 'Buddha's Little Finger,' by Victor Pelevin (http://www.amazon.com/Buddhas-Little-Finger-Victor-Pelevin/dp/0141002328/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1416362886&sr=1-2&keywords=pelevin) It does help if you have some background in Soviet-era history and propaganda; and it's also Russian translated to English, so it can be a little weird sometimes, but it's really interesting. I really enjoy a lot of Pelevin's work; he did a modern retelling of 'Theseus and the Minotaur' (http://www.amazon.com/Helmet-Horror-Theseus-Minotaur-Myths/dp/1841958891/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1416363002&sr=1-2&keywords=helmet+of+horror) but written in the format of a chat room. And then he has another 'Oman Ra' (http://www.amazon.com/Omon-Ra-Victor-Pelevin/dp/0811213641/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1416363030&sr=1-1&keywords=omon+ra) that is about Soviet cosmonauts and their attempts to go to the moon.

As far as straight up mysteries, maybe check out 'hardboiled detective' novels; it's what a lot of the classic Film Noir films were based off of. Pretty much anything by Dashiell Hammett ('The Maltese Falcon') or Raymond Chandler ('The Big Sleep') is good. If you liked 'Sin City' and that style of detective stories, start with Hammett and Chandler.

Les misérables - Victor Hugo , Cyrano de bergerac, Someone else- Benacquista,  The count of Monte Cristo - Dumas, tristan and isolde, LOTR, anything that's by J-P sartre, 1984 and the art of war.

One of the best books I've read is La part de l'autre, but there's only the french version that's available.

Lots of  french titles but I just personally prefer french literature
