Man gets NFC chip implants in hands to store Bitcoin wallet

RedRound2

So what’s safer than storing Bitcoins in an encrypted hardware disconnected from the internet?  Why inside your own body of course, which is exactly where one Bitcoin user has injected and stored his currency.

Martijn Wismeijer, a Dutch entrepreneur has walked around with an NFC chip injected in both of his hands for the past 10 days. The chips don’t serve the same purpose, however, as one contains data that can be often changed and overwritten, while the other contains his encrypted Bitcoin wallet data.

Having a chip in his hands allows him to do things like give out his contact details by simply having his hand scanned, or make payments with the hand containing the encrypted wallet.

Martijn’s doctor wasn’t crazy about him having the “NFC Type 2 compliant NTAG216 RFID chipset” implanted into his body, which is stored in a small 2 x 12 millimeter capsule. Each chip can store around 880 bytes of information, and the chips themselves (along with a preloaded syringe) were purchased for $99 from a site called DangerousThings.com

Interestingly enough, the founder of DangeriousThings.com (Amal Graafstra) has taken it a step further, and has used chips in his hands to unlock the doors of his house for almost the past 10 years (in combination with Samsung Ezon door locks). He says that after a while you don’t even notice the chips, and acknowledges that the injections do hurt a bit more than your standard flu shot.

Here's a video of how they implant NFC chips

My Thoughts: So many people now know that there's this weirdo with his bitcoin wallet implanted on his hand. Does he have magic powers to stop someone from kidnapping him and cut his hand? We're talking about possibly thousands of dollars here, so why not.

Tables have turned. Now thieves get to cut hands.

The stone cannot know why the chisel cleaves it; the iron cannot know why the fire scorches it. When thy life is cleft and scorched, when death and despair leap at thee, beat not thy breast and curse thy evil fate, but thank the Builder for the trials that shape thee.

I think that storing your bitcoin wallet on you is a little odd, but I actually really liked the idea of unlocking your house with your hands. I do wonder what kind of complications could happen 20-30 years down the road; just because nothing has happened for 10 years doesn't mean something can't.

I'd be shocked, but when I was looking into RFID door locks a few years ago I found a ton of people do this with RFID tags. They use the tags that veterinarians use as electronic dog tags... you can buy a kit with the needle/"install" device for like $50.

This is one thing I personally wouldn't DIY haha.

EDIT: Rushing to conclusions again... OP already said most of what I did.

Hope he doesn't have plans to move to a country that considers bitcoin joke currency/has it banned. Likewise if his own country not treating bitcoin the same.

If you couldn't tell, still not a fan of bitcoin. From coins being lost via lol gox, being used to purchase illegal drugs and for child porn, it's really hard to chant hooray for it. The rollar coaster value nature also doesn't help any. But hey, if someone wants creepy implants in their hand, that's their issue.

In several years bitcoin might reach new records as there is limited amount of them and one day he might have milions in his hands.

People who will target him will find the way to scan his hands without making a scratch on him.

Not sure if i felt safe with everybody knowing about me (its on the internet forevaaaaaa)

I am assuming this is more common than we think, but most people aren't so stupid to advertise that they have private data or digital currency implanted in their hand.

On a separate note I think he watched too much Star Wars and gets off on waving his hands at things to make them work.

"use the embedded nfc chip, luke"
