Nvidia Turf Effects Technology Displays Truly Next-Gen Grass Simulation

harrybob141

ERMAGERD GRASS. Should be arsum. imagine rust

Now I’m no horticulture expert but even I was impressed by Nvidia’s latest graphical development, Turf Effects. In this age of diminishing returns it’s not often a feature comes along that can genuinely blow your socks off, so I have to admit I was surprised it was grass effects that does it.

Nvidia’s new Turf Effects GameWorks technology allows the GPU to render and simulate grass and its movement on a massive scale, rendering more than a million individual blades of grass in just 1ms on a GeForce GTX 680 and above. The grass itself dynamically scales depending on hardware and its distance from the player, range from just three polygons right up close to several hundred when zoomed in. Perhaps most impressive of all, every individual blade of grass has its own shadows and dynamic physics effects that allow it to be crushed and trampled permanently.

The resolution scaling allows for millions of blades of grass to be simulated at any one time. Up close you can see the grass blades throwing shadows on each other, while the weight of blades can clearly be seen weighing down others.

Most excitingly of all is the cube collisions Nvidia shows in the trailer below, which allows these millions of grass blades to interact with complex objects and be permanently crushed, or recover in a short period of time.

Nvidia claim that this is a truly next-gen gaming feature, and opens up the possibility of numerous new types of play in survival games and the like, allowing players to track the movements of other players and animal or identify where a struggle occurred.

Turf Effects will be available as a part of Nvidia GameWorks in 2015, so we should hopefully see titles crop up that begin to make use of it in the coming year. It's clear that games like Rust and The Forest could make great use of this

A seemingly simple, and somewhat redundant improvement/factor, but a major step in the direction of the evolution of foliage from what we currently have. One has to wonder, could this technology be applied to hair/fur physics?

Whats the impact on performance? He said mere milliseconds on a GTX 780 but a better example would be helpful. If its nothing then hell yeah!

Depending on the system I would say 1-3 fps Max

That was a GTX 680,not a 780, which should give you some vague frame of reference as to what it needs, something fairly recent, but not bleeding-edge.

Sweet. I want this now but I know it will be at least 10 years before we see this. Unless a new Crysis game comes out and they go all out on graphics.

Yeah but it'll probably run like ass since it'll run at 10 fps

Doesn't matter because it will mean there will be demand for powerful GPU's and CPU's again. At the moment there is nothing that is demanding in any way and when they run poorly it's because they have been poorly coded not because they are good looking.

Consoles will never be able to run this, which means that pc's will never get to run this because it would make consoles look inferior (which they are) so the devs will be paid not not use this and lock games at 30fps.

Yay.

LIke I posted earlier, it's nothing significant on it's own, but if you consider the implications, and if ever implemented (which, kind of like PhysX, I feel it will never bee utilized to it's full potential, unfortunately) the step forward in foliage/ground decoration, it adds to the immersion. If this  technology can be implemented or hair/fur, it adds another level of immersion. A technology like this will allow games to achieve a realism that is closer to something you'd find in a CG movie.

One example I can think of for this (even though it's horrible, and i've never played the game) is Brave.

It's potential, not everything that's a big deal has to be ground-breaking. It's small things like this that lead to the groundbreaking changes we see.

I also don't think that you can deny that it looks significantly better than this, what we currently have.

That is very true.

But I'm still waiting for GPUs to play catch up to 4K, heck, some games still run like ass on a 1440p (which is why I'm yet to buy one)
