LGA775 Core2Duo, Core2Quad OVERCLOCKING guide

harrynowl

Let's see. My Core 2s. I have a 2.9 in my low profile HP that tops out at about 3.3GHz in SetFSB. (4GB DDR3, stock 240w 80+ PSU, Radeon X1300, etc.)

My laptop has a 3GHz T9900 that can run 3.2 with dual IDA at about 1.something volts. I have it set so that on AC it runs about 2.8GHz at 1v and about 2.4GHz at .9v on battery. Theoretically with a bit of soldering I could get a max CPU speed of 4GHz. Mismatched 2GB DDR2 sticks.

Then my ultrabook has a 2.5GHz Twhatever that could also be theoretically modified to have a ~3.2GHz max speed. It runs a single 4GB DDR3 stick. Runs 2.5GHz at 1.025v and on battery it runs 2GHz at .9v.

just made a new build yesterday

it is based on the Q6600 with the Gigabyte G41 board

and surpirse was the board OC the Q6600 to 3GHz without me touching the BIOS settings

FSB was bumped to 333MHz the moment i fire it up

using a Xigmatek Apache III which looks like a Zalman evil twin

but at idle i getting around 68 degrees and 73 degrees at load when it was doing Win updates

is this warm? note my room temp is like 30+ degrees

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

that does sound a bit warm. try prime 95 to make sure its stable and won't overheat.

will try it tmr

but i just learnt one thing about this cooler this morning

it only supports up to 65W TDP CPUs

might be the reason

You'll need a better cooler then, unless you want to switch to a dual core.

Recently got my hands on a G41 express board.

I just love that these things are still booting with 150% overclock or more - no idea if I could get anything like this stable, hadn't had the time. But that aside, it's a ton of fun to tinker with these things.

and due to scratches from the pesky install

Well, after moving all of my parts back to my Commander MS-I case, discovering that the P5Q Deluxe allows me to mount my Seidon 120V's rad in the top, and installing the rad without a pull fan, CPU temps dropped by over 10oC and now my Xeon has a 24/7 stable (at full load) OC of 4.07GHz, with the temps rarely touching 55oC. And now my GTX 970 is back to being the loudest part of my rig.

Yep, and I didn't save the benchmarks since I was overclocking, but its scoring a lot higher than it was before at the same clock speed.

You need to give my Xeon some contest. I can beat Jumper though.

I've got the headroom that's for sure. But I'd need to take everything off auto first, since I've found my 24/7 OC.

Ah but you'll be using phase probably so we won't actually be competing at all.

Not to rain on your parade but I think your board may be reporting those frequencies at boot but it's running in a "safe" mode after it failed to boot. See what's reported in Windows :)

I was going to say, that looks a little off, and then ask how the hell he got his G41 chipset to clock like that because I definitely need to know.   :D

Whenever I go past my ASUS P5B-E Plus' max FSB speed of 1066MHz, nothing works. How do I push overclocks without passing the max FSB speed, or how can I set a FSB speed >1066MHz without making the system crash all the time? Max CPU multiplier is x9. It won't let me set a higher value. CPU: X5450 (with mod-sticker, added Xeon microcode to bios, 2.4GHz currently)

The only way is to have an extreme (unlocked) core2 quad :(

This is good, I thought my 631 was the 86W TDP model, but its actually 65W, which bodes well for that 5GHz mark:

Ok, a FSB of 333MHz, voltage at 1.5, and the computer posts and only flickers the beginning of the windows logo before restarting.
