LGA775 Core2Duo, Core2Quad OVERCLOCKING guide

harrynowl

So... I received my QX6850 G0 today along with the replacement P5Q Turbo, it turns out that it was the same damn motherboard I sent back. So I'm stuck with a beast of a CPU, a liquid cooler bought for it along with a new case and PSU, 6GB of DDR2 capable of 1066MHz, but no fricking LGA775 motherboard in working order. KMN. FFS, I've actually fried my P4 630 (why couldn't the SOB die when I wanted it to), my E8500 and my Xeon X5450-the new CPU works in the motherboard.

Dude, that sucks. I would give you my 680i board, but then i wouldn't have a board for my Q6600.

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

The mobo is working now, that's the crazy part. Though overclocking is a lot easier on it this time as I rigged up an old reset switch to the CMOS clear jumpers, I don't need to remove the side panel anymore when an OC fails.

i meant  your chips you lost to that board. but still cool it came back to life. that's quite a loss there, an x5450.

The other CPU's aren't that big a deal (except maybe the E8500, I could have come close to 5GHz), and the X5450 was the C0 stepping, so it sucked for overclocking.

thats a good oc

That is an impressive overclock. Congrats :D

Yeah, I ended up bumping it up to 3.1 GHz.  Almost a 100% OC.  :D

Oh, but an x5450 is still an x5450. it's the best 775 cpu for the money really. i mean 50 bucks for a cpu that's better than a qx9775 is really unheard of.

*facedesk* I just got the X5450 out, and the mod strip has fallen off, so I might be able to salvage it.

oh sweet, but i doubt you can salvage it if it's been fried, even if the strip fell off.

Either way, I should have an E0 stepping variant arriving soon.

Weird... I just tried 486 FSB and 7x multiplier, which still puts my CPU at 3.4GHz but lets me select a memory multiplier that matches one of the specifications listed in the SPD. Then I set the timings manually, and it seems all my memory errors are gone. I guess it was auto setting timings to the wrong thing?

Oh well, I still had to revert to stock because of another problem.. everything ran too fast. If I looked at the clock in Windows it would go 1.5x faster than it normally should, and everything in games happened way too quickly. Any idea how to solve this? I tried bcdedit /set {current} useplatformclock Yes in CMD already, but that didn't help.

Anyone else ever had this problem?

Well the memory part is fairly typical, having to manually change memory timings etc to achieve stability is quite common on this platform.

As for the second part... no that's not something I've ever encountered. Sounds very strange.

Hmm, do you think the speed-up issue happened because I raised the FSB too high? I didn't notice anything just raising it to 378, but maybe that just wasn't high enough for me to perceive it. I've seen people use pretty high FSB and low multiplier though and they never had this problem.. Maybe just a Windows 10 bug.

Well, this is getting even weirder now. Booted into Win7 with 486FSB and 7x multiplier, same settings as last time, clock is running normally. Booted into Win10 with the same settings, and.. time is running normally too! Guess I'll see if it starts freaking out again or not..

Well that sucks, I can't register to view the page, and my E8500 needs about 1.4V to do 4.4GHz (though that may have changed, I haven't tried it on my P5Q Turbo yet-I still can't believe that its automatic voltage settings are good for 1.5V, especially considering its refurbished and supposedly for spares).
