LGA775 Core2Duo, Core2Quad OVERCLOCKING guide

harrynowl

So what would you recommend?

ASUS P5Q Deluxe/Pro/Turbo

Gigabyte EP45 UD3R/UD3P/Extreme

And do the 771 mod and you'll be set with a very fast CPU.

I don't know if I would be doing the 771 mod on a nice P45 board. I was looking at a Q9300 or Q9550

What's the risk of me breaking the board? I might go QX6850 down the line.

the risk is that you bend some pins in the socket.

You might want to double check the price of a QX6850, I know that they aren't exactly cheap after buying one, and they are a lot slower than my Xeon X5450. But having a slightly unlocked multiplier will be good when overclocking. (You could probably push it further on your current motherboard-probably).

Edit: scratch that, I was only able to push my Xeon X5450 to 3.2GHz on a slightly weaker motherboard (G33 chipset) as its 3+1 Phase VRM overheated since it was uncooled.

Pretty low, just take it steady it's pretty hard to screw the process up.

Well this is awkward. I put both my GTX 970 and GTX 650 Ti OC 2GB on my P5Q Deluxe, install in RAM slot 2A 1 2GB stick of naked RAM, and 1 1GB overclocking stick of RAM in slot 2B, and my Xeon is now running at a stable FSB of 440 with no tweaks. (3.96 GHz)

Edit: semi stable, CPU-Z won't load

that is strange. bench it quick before it changes its mind!

It did, couldn't validate with CPU-Z, so I upped the voltage a tad, enabled load line calibration and disabled CPU spread spectrum.

Is your Xeon a dud or is my P5Q just a helluva lot better than yours? :P

I left every except the fan control on default settings-so there is loads of room for improvement. At least I can get it posting above a 400MHz FSB now.

Ok, everything appears stable after those changes, now to bench (and hope the Seidon 120V doesn't melt).

tbh it could be the xeon to an extent, the variance in batches is pretty high. its like my first e8400 could barely get past 4.4ghz and the one that i have now can do 4.9ghz thats a huge difference is the side bus speed.

Here we go again, at 3.96GHz with no throttling the Xeon scored lower than my QX 6850 at 3.34GHz. And it scored higher than the QX6859 singlethreaded. This is ridiculous.

Re ran, and now it scores a lot higher than the QX6850 in multithreaded. WTF is going on with this rig?

The NB on this P5Q Deluxe is f*****, I can't push the FSB past 471MHz no matter what I do.

What RAM are you rolling?

I'll post the last SS I took when I figure out what's died. But I will say straight up that I almost fried the stick with no heatspreader, and that all 4 sticks in use can run at 1066MHz with no problems (1 is DDR2 1066MHz Corsair XMS2, the other 3 are DDR2 800 Kingston HyperX 2GB and 2x1GB TeamGroup Xtreem Dark)

I think if you just used a single fast stick you'd have better results.

2GB of RAM is no where near enough, and I get lower maximum FSB with less sticks of RAM.

Well all those sticks and sticks of lower frequency is probably hurting your IMC.

Yeah but at the same time, people wanting like $200 for a board that's ancient and used, outdated etc... It's like.. wat.

This is like the best thing I found for less than $100, I think I also found a asus turbo something for $75

What about socket 1366? Every CPU is overclockable, and like 775 it has cheap Xeons, but they don't need to be modded.

X58 is expensive and not as fun IMHO. Plus you need to invest in triple channel to get a nice score going :P
