We already know Maxwell is efficient and cool-running, and that they have significant overclocking potential, but this is just crazy. K|NGP|N and TiN have broken the 2GHz barrier on a GTX 980 Maxwell GPU.

"The power efficiency of the new GPUs allow for higher overclocking with lower power consumption, even on air cooling," said Illya "TiN" Tsemenko. "The fact that it is not so demanding on power consumption, allows you to achieve clockspeeds that were not possible before on a reference power design."

 

^This pretty much sums it up. I've read of several reviewers claiming they could hit upwards of 1500mhz (MSI Gaming 4G GTX 970) and that's without even increasing the voltage. Most will probably push to 1400+ easily.

 

AMD better have something reeeeeally special hidden up their sleeves...

Don't give 2 Shits... They did do this on Kepler and on Hawaii... Hasn't anyone learned? These tests are next to useless OVERCLOCKS are sheer luck nothing more, and these people are so famous that Nvidia actually Bins specific chips for them chips nearly guaranteed to make world record OCs and give it to famous OC'ers to simply get everyone hyped...

The crazy liquid nitrogen overclocks are cool but I like to do more with my machines than a few minutes to get a benchmark done. I'll stick with air and water for now.

When I read the first couple posts saying 2Ghz on water, a tear went down my face, a tear of joy. Then I read the article and nowhere did it say anything other than LN2 and a tear went down my face, a tear of sadness. :'(
