Because R9 270 is almost as good, and costs less.

the mid range gpus are never in my lineup but i know that the  270 series is perfectly fine

They're not designed for the same things... The 980 is made for 1440p gaming, while the 270X is made for 1080p. Comparing these two is like comparing an i3 with an i7.

Why don't you ask those people because as far as i know, the 270x is not a bad card.

All cards are fine theres just some extremely bad cases and you usually only hear the vocal few who have lists of problems not the guys who just slap it in and have it work and forget about it... but personally i'd get a 270 or step up to 285, 280, 280x, 770, or 970 as the  ONLY difference between 270 and 270x is clock speeds which you can replicate
