EVGA could lose out on quite a bit of money due to trying to cut costs in putting together GTX 970/980 cards

When Asus screws up the R9 290 and 290X nobody bats an eye, but when EVGA has the cooler on a slight offset position, everyone loses their minds.

That's absolutely not true. Everybody stopped recommending their cards after the botched 290 and 290X DCUII implementation.

I doubt that this is cost cutting. EVGA doesn't cost cut as much as any of the other brands it's why they have the longest warranties and best support. It's most likely just an oversight that they never thought about. We are only human.

Sorry but shit like this does matter regardless or whenever or not the cards need that 3rd heat pipe, simply because EVGA went from giving you lifetime warranties to not giving a single fuck.

Except thats not necessarily the case...Whos to say the new cooler they would've designed would've even had that heatpipe? For all you know the new cooler would've been short one heatpipe as its not really necessary.....So, since they would've excluded it anyway, they may as well just reuse the old cooler as it would perform identically. The fact that there are no heat issues -- i.e. functioning properly leads me to the conclusion that they knew the heatpipe wouldn't be in full contact and understood it simply didn't matter.

I doubt 99% of people that buy GPUs even understand who EVGA are or even what a cooler is, they will not lose any business

I was a little suprised in the design EVGA choose this time around. Seemed almost too downtoned.

Let's look at the facts; It works and it works well. What is the problem?

 

It's not a "hot" chip like other/previous GPUs and if they had developed a new cooler specifically for the 970/980 it would have increased the cost. I really don't see the issue. Companies do this all the time and most of us don't even know it.  

 

 

The only real issue I've been hearing about with the EVGA cards is the fans are a bit noisy.

Wasn't it the 280 and 280x.

Or are they both botched.

Because I'm pretty sure the 280x at least had a 770(edit: apparently the 780) cooler slapped on it.

This is all I am gonna add to this post.
 

In addition to the actual defective part on one of the cards, there are a host of issues with the EVGA design unfortunately.

 

The heatsink doesn't make proper contact with the core by design, and the vrm/volt controller are of low quality (and only 4-phase rather than 6 on other custom designs) as discussed here by TPU's review: http://www.techpowerup.com/…/E…/GTX_970_SC_ACX_Cooler/4.html

Perhaps is cheaper to make a large run of one heatsink and use it across multiple SKUs then to make a separate design for low-end designs.

Like I said in a previous post, they already had these coolers and the manufacturing for these coolers up and running; and the new cooler they would've designed specifically for the 970 wouldn't have had that heatpipe at all--effectively making this cooler perform virtually the same as the new one they would've designed in its place. So, might as well save them (and the consumer) money and just use the old, perfectly suitable, cooler.

Well I never saw to many people compaining about the ACX cooler on the 700 series cards beside I think the fan blades being thin.

it performs better and cooler on a lower TDP GPU Core, we have yet to see how it is gonna perform on the 980.
