EVGA could lose out on quite a bit of money due to trying to cut costs in putting together GTX 970/980 cards

DeViLzzz

If it was slightly offset it wouldnt be a big deal, but its pretty much making no contact with the one heatpipe. big fail.

yet the temps are in line with everyone else's....so if a cooler was specifically designed for the 970 would it even have that heat pipe? Probably not. So really it's not a daily, but rather a way to save people money.

im aware of that entirely, but then for that case save product costs by taking out the heatpipe all together.

the cooler was already made and they already had the manufacturing process already set up.

I would rather have it as it is with full contact to the two larger heat pipes.

well then this ties in to multiple other cases. the first being that its a more power efficient chip so a cooler made for a hotter chip is now unecessary and theres probably more than that one heatpipe that could come out of it. The second being that like nay other company there are advances made in manufacturing and EVGA could have probably saved allot of money using a new process that made a lesser cooler.

doubtful since a huge chunk of the cost is R&D and making all the stuff to make the new cooler, or at least adapting it.

I hope there will be reference cooler GTX 970 available in the future. Otherwise I think I'm going with Asus Strix in my itx build.

I want the Strix but it's too long to fit in my SG05. Really wishing I had gotten the Node 304 instead.

Yeah, I think MSI is also too tall for your case. I don't know why these vendors are making these cards wider.

these cards already overclock like beasts... seen linuses? and thats on a blower cooler

So you're saying that they wouldn't overclock even better with a properly designed cooler? Yeah, didn't think so, stop making excuses for them.

Are there charts comparing temps/noise/throttling with other coolers?

Heat would spread evenly throughout the block anyway right? idk physics

yep but still not as optimal as direct contact but i really doubt it would make that much of a difference.

bigger fans so they are quieter.

swap coolers and see what happens? is it even hitting its thermal ceiling?

ACX 2.0 looks terrible compared to the ACX on the GTX 770, 780, and 780ti.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P
If it's not broken, take it apart and fix it.

People im sure if it was an issue Evga would not be selling them! there not stupid they know stuff like this gets out and someone was going to take the card apart... Evga has one of the best warranties in the industry so even if u do have an issue im sure they would more than likely do something about. stop freaking out -_-

Asus also should've been smart enough not to pull that shit with the R9 290/x.

/Not saying EVGA did anything wrong here.

Don't cancel your order <_<

Aside from the fact that its a great card and the cooler is perfectly fine, EVGA has an AMAZING customer service department.

This is EVGA's official response as of ~6 hours ago: http://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2220695

The way the EVGA GTX 970 ACX heat sink was designed is based on the GTX 970 wattage plus an additional 40% cooling headroom on top of it. There are 3 heat pipes on the heatsink – 2 x 8mm major heat pipes to distribute the majority of the heat from the GPU to the heatsink, and a 3rd 6mm heatpipe is used as a supplement to the design to reduce another 2-3 degrees Celsius. Also we would like to mention that the cooler passed NVIDIA Greenlight specifications.

Due to the GPU small die size, we intended for the GPU to contact two major heat pipes with direct touch to make the best heat dissipation without any other material in between.

We all know the Maxwell GPU is an extremely power efficient GPU, our SC cooler was overbuilt for it and allowed us to provide cards with boost clocks at over 1300MHz. EVGA also has an “FTW” version for those users who want even higher clocks.

precision_gtx970sc.png

Regarding fan noise, we understand that some have expressed concerns over the fan noise on the EVGA GTX 970 cards, this is not a fan noise issue but it is more of an aggressive fan curve set by the default BIOS. The fan curve can be easily adjusted in EVGA PrecisionX or any other overclocking software. Regardless, we have heard the concerns and will provide a BIOS update to reduce the fan noise during idle.

Thanks,
EVGA

Man Australia gets hosed. :(

If it makes you feel better though, I have been trying to buy the Gigabyte 970 and the lowest in stock I can find is NCIX at 599. Looks like these things perform so well and have such great temps/clocks we are gonna get gouged. My local Microcenter doesn't even have them listed and I wonder if they aren't going to bother. When AMD's were getting price gouged to hell and back (lite coin) Microcenter didn't carry them.

...... Except it obviously is cutting corners. Why do they not just straight up say that they did this to save costs? And the fanboyism over in that thread is unbearable.. as well as the response from the EVGA guy.

Really put me off buying any of their products to be perfectly honest.
