R9 295x2 or Titan Black?

Chizbang

My brother has a £700 budget and theres a R9 295x2 cheap enough for him to buy (overclockers UK) and hes tempted but worried about losing PhysX. In my opinion, I think PhysX is a really annoying marketing ploy and is nothing but a mere gimmick, but he thinks otherwise. (which I can see his point, its pretty cool but personally, given the opportunity, Id much much much rather have performance over a few fancy physics effects) He cant make his mind up whether he should get an R9 295x2 or a Titan Black. Should he compromise PhysX for better performance? Or should he compromise the performance and go for a Titan Black?

He wants the most future proof card for his money. Sadly, SLI or Crossfire is *NOT* an option (theres a complication that will make this impossible) so any ideas would be much appreciated!

Also, apparently AMD cards are worse for Photoshop than AMD cards? But when we are talking R9 295x2 steaks, surely theyre so powerful anyway the performance difference, albiet different will be unnoticeable... He does drawing in PS etc.

Just get the R9 295X2 unless he really is dead set on PhysX. It doesn't make an overly significant difference in the games that it is used in.

PhysX is not a marketing ploy or a gimmick, it's an actual add-on effect for games that have it implemented.

If he wants Nvidia, he can get a 780ti and be happy with it, or wait for the supposed announcement for the 900-series next week.

Titans are not gaming cards.

The R9-295x2 is a beauty of a card and if he can fit it and the included AIO into his case go for it.

I presume your brother is a gamer, if yes, then he should go for the 295X2. Considering the amount of raw horsepower that card has it is a safe bet that's the most future proof gaming card he could get for 700 quid.

in a simple price-performance comparison, the 295x2 is a CLEAR winner.

physX is effectively worthless in any game it's in. it serves no additional purpose besides mildly annoying particle effects in borderlands 1/2. if he gets the titan he is simply burning money and is making a VERY ignorant and uninformed decision.

What kind of complication? If it's just a physical complication, don't mind my post. If it's related to some stability issues or games/programs, keep in mind that the 295x2 IS a crossfire card (2x290X pretty much).

PhysX is limited to a small number of titles, and isn't a deal breaker imho. The raw performance gain of the R9 295 X2 outweighs this one small feature of Nvidia cards.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

As per the very definition of Gimmick - In marketing language, a gimmick/Physx is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature. It began, however, as a slang term for something that a con artist or magician had his assistant manipulate to make appearances different from reality.

Gimmicks aside nvidia does have one value card for sale being the Titan but the marketing behind the card is flawed. For a workstation user the Titan is a good value but for the gamer which is what Titan is marketed towards it is a complete fail of a GPU.

What?

PhysX adds a lot to the games that implement it well.

Warframe, for example.
