i7 5820K/5930K longeivty?

how long will the 5820K/5930K last at 1080p for both gaming and general productivity? i will be overclocking to 4.2Ghz+ will a noctua NH-D14. so how many years before i will need to replace the CPU?

However, it should last pretty much forever. I have never actually seen a dead CPU which isn't caused by the motherboard.

My CPU has lasted 4+ years and is still running strong. I'm sure you'll get similar life out of that processor.

If you only game on your pc, you'd be heavily wasting your money if you got either of those, they are WAY overkill and don't significantly increase gaming performance simply because games don't need all that power. Get an i5 4690k and you'll most likely be fine for 4-5 years.

it all depends what you'll do with it, i have a 64 x2 cpu in my old computer that still works fine, it's around 7 years old, but i guess around 5 years atleast for that i7

Go easy on the voltage and it will easily outlive it's useful life. 

 

My last system had an Intel i7 975X that I undervolted to 0.990 volts and got 3.8GHz and it's still going strong 5 years later. Voltage kills your CPU far faster than frequency does so keep the voltage around Intel's VID and it'll last a long time.

MInd that the CPU technology and the DDR4/X99 tech is still now. OC may kill that CPU faster since it is the first version of the X99 chipset. We can call haswell-e for the First X99 stable test CPUs:D Alsot he whole DDR4 is new and may be unstable. Also today you can get X99 mobos which supports DDR4 Cas 15 to 16. But next year there may will be DDR4 3500 mhz at cas 14 or less and your motherboard may not support it. So you would have to change MB for that.

 

There is MANY cons with the new X99, but ppl like me do it for the lulz.

You could buy an i7-4790k and still be set for close to a decade.

 

Games don't utilize more than 4 cores/threads & hyperthreading and we are a long way off from them starting to do so.

If it can handle an FX 9590, then it can overclock a 5820K.

The 6 core is fine with air cooling a 4930K is easily cooled with an NH-D14 I am sure the NH-D15 is even better with the 5820K.
