How do car enthusiasts feel about self driving cars?

Nicolas

One of the things about being a car enthusiast is the experience of driving your car, if you take that away (in my mind) there's no point in having a car, you know, it's like yeah take me places but it stops being that experience you have with your car, as a car enthusiast myself I hate self driving cars, maybe there's something I'm not seeing, but if I had millions of dollars I wouldn't pay a driver to drive me around, I would drive around myself because that's something I love.

I know there's quite a bit of car enthusiasts in this forums so how do you guys feel about it?

99.9999999999999999999% of people use cars to take them places faster than walking and at times busses and trains dont run.

BUT i understand the joy of driving, i enjoy it aswell, but i think its AWESOME to have selfdriving cars, but i want to be able to drive as well at times, but the boring drive to and from work every day isnt one i care about, the high speed drive out on the small roads are another thing

as long as the ride feels good and the liability is done properly its all good to me. insurance liability is the thing that worries me with these since you are in one but aren't controlling it I can see some complicated things arise from this.

Not a car enthusiast, but I find driving a horribly stressful ordeal and would definitely get a self-driving car. Hope this eventually gets combined with those car-sharing programs in big cities, then we'll be living in the future :)

Could be useful for all of them 80yo grandpas/grandmas driving cars..they are danger to everybody.

I'd never let a car drive me though.I'm perfectly capable of driving my own car.

Hope the self-driving car is locally controlled, not by a network grid, who the fuck knows what would happen if anyone hacks it

I hate it. It's a good idea for those who cannot drive, either for disability or old age, but for those of us capable of driving, I would largely rather trust human instinct, as otherwise no one would be able to properly enjoy B road driving. Also, the issue of maintenance and repairs crops up. You will no doubt have to go to a specialist centre to get it fixed, as not just any old garage could fix a car packed with crazy technology. These specialist centres would of course cost a small fortune, because it's a closed market. This would encourage people to tinker with the cars themselves, and no doubt someone would do something wrong, resulting in the car driving on the wrong side of the road, speeding, swerving into passing vehicles instead of avoiding them or some other dangerous act. If there was a dual control car, so you can activate driverless capabilities when you want to, or drive when you want to yourself without computer interaction, then I would support this, but full driverless capabilities with no controls at all does not sit right with me.

This is also a concern of a lot of people, with all the stuff that came out about hacking regular cars this is a legitimate concern

Great idea for those with impaired mobility. Old folks, drunk folks, and disabled folks could all benefit from being taxied around. We'd benefit from theoretically safer "drivers" in their place. I don't drive impaired or distracted, so I'd still prefer control over my vehicle. I can understand the desire to be chauffeured around though, especially during a routine commute. As long as the idea doesn't go full retard, I think it's a good one.

Need I say more?

Honestly, I'd welcome the change because half of the drivers here in Vancouver can't drive for shit. Then on that rare occasion when it snows; people don't use all weather tires and then they panic.

dont need some thing to drive me around because I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself, but for the older folk, well they will need it since every time I drive they are always doing 5-10mph under the speed limit and it drives me crazy
